Stop between Montepulciano and Sorrento?
Hi Folks!
We will have a car our week in Montepulciano and I am thinking of taking a leisurely drive down to the Amalfi Coast for the second half of our vacation, instead of taking the train. It seems the journey is about 5 hours total, without traffic. Since time is somewhat on our side I was considering leaving Montepulciano in the morning, taking our time driving a few hours, finding a nice little town to stop in, explore, and sleep in on the way, and then heading to Sorrento early the next morning. Any suggestions for such a town somewhere around halfway between Southern Tuscany and Sorrento? It does not have to be off the A1 - we will travel a few hours out of our way... This will be in late June.
Quaint and affordable are the key ideas here.
Many thanks for all of your help - the search feature has been immensely helpful in planning this trip.

They're not exactly half way in between but two towns that come to mind are Orvieto about an hour north of Rome, and Caserta, about an hour north of Naples. Orvieto because it's simply amazing for any number of reasons. It's probably our favorite town in Italy. Do a search on this site for all the positive reviews. Caserta because it has the most incredible Royal Palace and Gardens in all Italy if not Europe. It's said to rival Versailles and the waterfall down to the palace is something that pictures can't begin to depict. The "new" town of Caserta is pretty industrial, but I understand that Caserta Vecchio is charming; sorry we missed it. (We had only stopped to break up our trip from Orvieto to Praiano; little did we know!)

The town of Bracciano is charming. Its a small town on Lake Bracciano complete with a castle. We went a few years ago and were happy we made the effort. Its about an hour north of Rome.

Umbria is also wonderful. I too would second Orvieto with a stop in Civita da Bagnoregio. Its hard to imagine a more fascinating hill town to visit. http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/desti...y/civitabd.htm
