I just booked my first flight since the problems in England for two weeks from now. I'm still planning to do carry-on as I'll be on this business trip for only one night (domestic). I just won't wear makeup.

Why would they confiscate an empty water bottle?

Yes, flew in & out of LGA this week (w/toothpaste) & am leaving for LIT this weekend. The only place anyone has incurred any issues in my group has been PHL to date. They also lost two of my folks luggage there as well (that did check).

luv, I was told they were confiscating the empty bottles because they wanted to prevent people from mixing chemicals or liquids together to make "something."

as to the toothpowder, i use the Eco-Dent and it is great. in fact i use it all the time, not just when travelling. it is widely available in health food stores like wild oats or whole foods, and there are online stores that carry it. Their website has an online store as well. www.eco-dent.com there is a new 'travel pack' that is ultra convenient as well.

About the eco-dent - Though it is expensive, it lasts forever. You just use a tiny bit.

Hi. I'm a newbie to these forums and I hope it's okay to just jump right onto a thread without an introduction.

What I'm wondering is how feasible it might be to ship a few liquid items ahead of time. I'm a tad, shall we say, high maintenance, when it comes to certain personal care products. I have super-curly hair and rely on a very specific conditioner and gel that I'm pretty certain I wouldn't be able to find just anywhere. I'd happily buy foundation, mascara, and shampoo at my destination, but I can't leave these two items.

Before the latest restrictions happened, I had committed myself to traveling this time with just carryon luggage (after a disastrous experience with checked luggage on a trip to Nicaragua). My first stop in Italy is going to be a B&B in Florence - any thoughts about how it might go if I tried to arrange with them to receive a package from me ahead of time?

Hi earthchick, I wouldn't be surprised if the B&B would be glad to have you mail a package to them but do be aware that packages from the US (which I assume is where you live) to Italy can take "forever" to arrive. They have to go through customs in Italy and I think packages sit in a dark hole somewhere before they are checked. Also, check with your shipper or the PO here to see if the items you want to ship are allowed to come into Italy. Italy is quite strict regarding what items they allow. You probably could get the list of "allowed items" off of the Italian Embassay website too I would think.

Earthchick: Welcome. It may surprise you but many US toiletries are available in Europe - plus many that might work even better.

So which products are you talking about?

Thanks for the welcome! Am really excited to have found this place - lots of good tips here. It makes me even more excited about my trip!

I use DevaCurl One Condition conditioner and Curlisto Control II gel mixed with Curlisto Structura Lotion. DevaCurl and Curlisto are both put out by salons in NYC that cater to curlyheads.

I'm going to look into shipping the products ahead of time but am thinking it might just be too much trouble. But it really bums me out to think that the only reason I have to check luggage is these three hair products! Everyone keeps saying the restrictions will probably loosen at some point, but I can't imagine it happening by the time I leave (Nov. 2). Was so looking forward to the streamlined one-bag experience....

Before you ship them - check w/ the distributor. Higher end salons and spas in Europe often carry specialist cosmetics from all over.

janisj, out of every bad comes some good. Since I am now allergic to corn I have had a problem with toothpaste. All brands contain Sorbitol which is derived from corn. My mouth has been burning and really has been a problem. Even toothpaste in Natural Food sections or stores have Sorbital in them (corn is a natural product of course and adds a sweet taste to toothpaste). Well the toothpowder Eco-Den T website states they do not use Sorbitol or any other sweetner!! I think my problem is solved.

And Seaurchin, dear one, I was NOT going to mention that we use to use spit to wet the Maybelline cake mascara LOL!! Although we did! I told my friend from HS that you posted this and we both had such a good laugh. Thanks buddy :

Went to Whole Food today, and they sold out of their Eco-Dent powder! Good news is that they have another brand called IPSAB that's a lot cheaper. 4 oz, for $5.39. Bad news is that they come in a shaker that's similar to Kraft Parmesan cheese, so I'll need a way to seal it after it's been opened.
