Stay one day longer in Florence or Venice?

I'm not a big Venice lover as others may be on this forum. So my answer to your question would be to stay an extra day in Florence. If you need to take a break from the city, then I'd go for a daytrip to one of the smaller cities that are easily accessible from Florence --- Siena & San Gimigano, or Lucca or 1/2 day in Pisa.
For me it would be Venice, but it depends what you want. Florence has much better daytrips (but don't miss the Burano one from Venice). Florence has lots more museums (but don't miss a full morning at Venice's huge and amazing Maritime museum).

But touring Florence is "work"; an exhausting grind in lines and horrible little sidewalks only 1 umbrella wide. Touring Venice is magic and serendipity that you want to go on for weeks IF you avoid the touristic trash masher areas of San Marcos square, Rialto, etc.

Venice, while beautiful, wouldn't necessarily get my extra day. I think 5 days in each is a good start - but an extra day would be spent in Tuscany. You could even spend 3 days in Florence and 3 days out in the country... and same with Venice, you could do a day trip or two...

Susan- I LOVE Venice- esp.if you are going with a special someone--it is very very romantic---but to me, 5 days is plenty---

And I love Florence- esp.if you are into shopping-- If I had to add an extra day, I too, would take a side trip out of Florence ====

Susan: love both cities, but lot's more to see and do in Venice. Personally me thinks 3 days in Florence is prefect. How are you getting from Flor-to-Veni, you might want to consider driving and seeing some of the Italian countryside. The cities are wonderful but we always enjoy our days spent driving thru the country, just a thought. You'll love Italy whatever itinerary you decide on.

Venice, Venise, Venezia without hesitation for me.
Or, if you don't think to it
o a day tour, just by the local bus (+- 1 hour)from Florence, to the gorgeous small medieval city of Sienna"Very nice and interesting to just walk around. In Florence, don`t miss the ¨real¨ David by Michael-Angelo in the small museum of Academia, the David outside on a plaza is a copy without the magic of the real + don't miss the Capella Medicis too"the other lace are really main & bigs attractions&museum you cannot miss. And finally, for some people (me by example) Venise is a non-end pure dream; just walk, be loose in small street and be on the boat (the vaporetto) all night long just for admired the gorgeous reflexion of venetian light on the water of the grande canaletto, It's unforgettable!.Enjoy!

Loved Venice for how quiet it is nad the charm of it all. If you have an extra day there take a boat to Burano or Murano. As Rick Steves says, Burano is village Venice without the glitz and but if you are in Florence stary for the art and architecture. I agree that if you have an extra day there to to Siena or San Gimignano both are worth the trip. Shar
