What people are saying is that there is no standard for the terms. All you can know is that the superior room will be a better room than the standard for that hotel. You can't say for example that the superior room will have a better bath. It may only mean that the superior has a bath and the standard does not.

You should ask the particular hotel you are considering what their difference is. In my experience, it is usually one or more of the following: larger, better bathroom (sometimes including tub instead of just shower -- in older hotels, these are often more a real original bathroom and much larger than the small, prefab installed shower bathrooms), better view, better location in the hotel, generally "nicer", more recently redecorated or refurbished, etc.
In some hotels, their std. room may not have a bathroom, as noted, and some rooms may not have been redecorated or refurnished yet if they are redoing the hotel.

While I've been comfortable in some standard rooms, I've never regretted upgrading to a superior room, even if that only means getting more space, an extra chair or some other comforts not found in standard rooms. But compare prices because sometimes the cost of a superior double is very near the price of a suite, which might include free breakfast or much more space. And so on.
