St. Cirq du Lapopie

My wife and I are considering staying in a villa for a week during September in St. Cirq du Lapopie while we are in the Cahors area. Does anybody have any opinions on this choice?

Thanks!

Strongly opposed views on St Cirq lapopie have been expressed on this board.

Take any and all with a grain of salt, including the one that follows:

For my part, I find it WAY too remote to be a good base for touring around. Also kinda touristy.

I would be more inclined to stay near a main axis, viz. the N-20, and travel ONCE to St Cirq.

I think the topic of this town ranks right up there with killing babies because they are boys, whether or not Rick Steves deserves to live on this planet, and whether or not to go to the Moulin Rouge show in Paris as one of the all-time polarizers in the Fodorite universe.

I love St Cirque Lapopie - it's really not that much different from Domme in terms of tourist appeal (a little touristy - but very interesting). However, If you plan to use it as a base for touring the famous sites in the Dordogne region, I agree with Tedgate that it's a little too remote. If you plan to just visit the Lot river Region (Penne d'Agenais/Cahors/Figeac/Gorge de l'Aveyron/Quercy Blanc/Rocamadour/Padirac) - it's fine. We've stayed in a gite near Domme for 8 weeks (4 trips) & used that as a base for exploring the Dordogne. We've also stayed south of St Cirque Lapopie near Caussade for 2 weeks to explore that area - so we know both regions pretty well. Find a place close to Domme, Roque Gageac, or Beynac if you want an ideal location to explore the Dordogne.

Another who loves this place. It's great after all the day trippers leave. it becomes almost magical. But we never stay in an all day touriSt place. You can visit France in tourist season without the crowds if you forget posters saying don't stay here or therE because they dont know the smaLLER VILLAGES THAT ARE EASIER FOR GETTING IN AND OUT TO WHERE YOU WANT TO VISIT.

Dukey, you forgot the dilemma of whether or not to wear white sneakers in Europe.

Hi T,

You will be near

Cahors: worth 1/2 day

Peche Merle: Definitely worth a visit

Figeac: Definitely worth a visit.

The drives along both the Lot and Cele rivers between St. C and Figeac are quite scenic.

Gouffre de Padirac, Rocamadour, St Cere,
and Sarlat are all 1:30 hr or less.

Others might be more familiar with the region to the West.
