brreid: Don't worry, most people know where St Andrews is (and don't pay any notice to someone who registered today simply to make his very first post "Where the --- is St. Andrews???&quot

Here is a very nice one you can check: http://www.braeside-standrews.co.uk/

If you will have a car, there are several great villages not far away with B&Bs and guest houses that tend to be less expensive than right in St Andrews.

Not too far outside of St.Andrews in Strathkinness is one of my favorite guesthouses, Fossil House , a winner of the Best Breakfast Award fromthe UK version of AAA. But,it's not close to everything.

When are you travelling? If it's close to the Open Golf Championship you'll b lucky to get booked within 10 miles.
Otherwise, St Andrews is not a big town so almost any guest house will be within reasonable distance of "everything". Before you book, check that it is actually in St Andrews town. The local tourist board (alas, now centralised) got tough several years ago with places claiming to be "by" St Andrews when they were miles away, but some operators will still try it.
If you have a car, any of the villages mentioned on other posts are within a short drive. Parking in town can be difficult but in summer the local council usually run a free bus from the big car park on the main A91 road out of town (close to the Old Course Hotel).
