Southern Germany/Lake Constance
Can anyone help on information on the Lake Constance area of Germany. We will be driving from Salzburg to Meersburg and staying overnight in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area. We would also like to stay in Meersburg overnight before taking the car ferry to Switzerland. Is it worth staying the night or can we make the drive in a few hours, look around and hop on the ferry and spend an extra night in Lucerne at the Montana. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

You do not say when you will be making your stay on the Bodensee a.k.a. Lake Constance. We found the island of Mainau, opposite Meersburg, worth every moment we could spare. We were there in June, and the gardens were spectacular -- thousands of flowers and shrubs in bloom.

Meersburg is worth more than an overnight but if that' all the time you have, then I would go for it. It is a lovely town.
As USNR said, Mainau Island is a must if you like flowers. It should be beautiful in May.
Here are some of our photos from our trip there in September:

We spent a night last year in Meersburg. Loved the town. It's got a very nice (but small) old town that takes you back in time. The town is on a hill so everything goes up or down!
Do Insel Mainau if you like flowers. Very beautiful.

Meersburg, Mainau Insel, and Lindau are all great places to spend time. I have not been to Rhinefals but my neighbor says it is a wonderful village to explore too. The Bodensee is worth a day or two if you can squeeze it into your schedule.

The Bodensee is well worth a WEEK or two!
enrique, check out BlandineForberg's reply to your thread over on TA... I'm too lazy to type the thing twice;-)
The disadvantage of Meersburg is that it is about the only place on the lake that has no railway connection. For whatever reason the railway line which runs around the whole lake does a detour further inland there. Konstanz is the most convenient place to stay in terms of public transport. Meersburg can be reached either by bus to Staad and then the car ferry across the lake, or by cruise boat from the port of Konstanz which is close to the train station.

We absolutely loved the Zum Baeren. So much charm and character! The owner is also the chef and the restaurant turns out some delicious meals.
Prices are reasonable and, while not on the lake, it is in a great location not far from the Castle.

We stayed at the Zum Baeren for two nights last September,as part of a three and a half week trip around Southern Germany and Austria and loved it. We also had dinner at the hotel both nights and shared tables with very interesting people. Good value and one of our favourite hotels. Lots to see and do in the area and the gardens at Mainau are well worth a visit. Enjoy!
