Southampton to Edinburgh to London

I have been reading and reading.

I am now considering a one way car rental from Southampton, arriving by cruiseship, with a drop off in Edinburgh. Interests are scenery, with a stop in Northampton, and Border Abbys. I'd like a day/part in Wales too, if doable and not bogged down with border delays??

I would then train back to London. I have a week.

Is this a workable plan??

If you think there might be "border delays" between England and Wales, you can't have been reading very much about the UK.

Doable but daft.

Southampton has an airport with direct flights to edinburgh that cost bobbins. Flybe are the main airline there.

Get one of those. rent a car and work your way back south.

The Scottish Borders are a nice place to get delayed but you don't have to clear immigration (yet!)

Border delays?? OK - you are kidding, right?

May I ask why Northampton? Are you visiting friends or something? Otherwise - its not really on the tourist/scenery path.

But sure, you can drive from Southampton through the Borders, and to Edinburgh in less than a week. You could do it in 2 or 3 days - but not see much enroute.

One stopover in Bath or Oxford, the next in Northampton (?), then a day/night in the Peaks or Yorkshire, then in a day in Northumberland (Hadrian's Wall), then the Borders, ending up in Edinburgh.

That would be a doable but rushed 6 days/nights.

Madness !

Seriously, look up Flybe.com, book a flight from Southampton to Edinburgh, hire a car in Scotland, and drive back down south using any route that appeals.

To drive up and back would just be stressful.

The journey from port to airport is less than 20 minutes. The airport is small and efficient. It really is the easiest way.

Flying would be much easier of course -- but then you'd be 25,000 feet above Northampton (not necessarily a bad thing)

I'm not sure, but haven't we already suggested your options on earlier threads? Or maybe that was someone else who wanted to drive the whole country in a week.

Actually Willit I use Southampton as my airport of preference. It's only an hour from london (about the same as heathrow) and is civilised and never overcrowded.

I use it when I can, but nobody flys to Italy from there. I agree about civilised - I have never had to wait more than about 2 minutes for baggage to arrive.

My original post was just exasperation that I had compsed a response , only to find that you had replied with all relevant information while I was typing.
