Could you stay in a B&B outside of the city center and take the bus? There are lots of them. We stayed in Aaron Lodge and the bus was almost right in front. (He has another property down the road that I would turn down if offered.)

Oh - now I know who you are.. No, you don't need to skip Edinburgh. And you don't want to! Though you will pay a premium to stay anywhere nice.
But - as I mentioned on one of your other threads, think of it as dollar cost averaging. You will pay much more in Edinburgh -- but less almost everywhere else in the UK (except for London, maybe Bath and few other places). So even if you do pay $100-$150 in Edinburgh, you'll only pay $55-$65 in most other areas so 2 nights in Edinburgh + 6 nights @ $60 and you are averaging about $75 a night.
