First time visit to Sorrento. Will be basing ourselves there for 4 nights.
I'm starting ot look at accomodations and am confused as to which area would be best. We won't have a car so need to reach the train station easily.
Should we stay in Centro Storico, Mare, Piano di Sorrento?

Piano sounds far away, but be extremely skeptical about any fuzzy name about location in Sorrento. Most hotels are quite remote in the hills, but are deceptive about this ("just minutes away" is a givaway it's not). Be ruthless in tracking down the few moderate price places in easy walking distance (which don't need to advertise or be conveniently on reservation systems), and use online maps.

In October we rented an apartment in the hills just a couple of kilometers from the center of Sorrento. We were a little concerned about the distance, but were reassured that the bus to town stopped just 100 meters away. Well, it did and it didn't, depending on the driver and how he felt about it. Twice the bus didn't stop to let us off and we were taken way past our apartment. The hill roads are so narrow it's not safe to walk along them, so we ended up waiting for return buses. Also, we found that the major bus stop in town wasn't much better and the buses were not even close to the schedule the half dozen times we took them. More than once, they just didn't come at all. We asked our apartment owners about just getting taxis instead and were told that they are very expensive from up in the hills (25 euros to their place). Oh, and if you're going to take the bus, make sure you buy a bus ticket ahead of time because you cannot pay for one on the bus itself.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is to either stay right in town, or make sure the hotel has a regular shuttle.

Hi Grimmy - I'd go for Centro Storico for convenience to the station.
