Sorrento vs Positano/Amalfi

Thank you Southernista. So, the only option to get to Amalfi/Positano from Florence is via Naples, then a private transfer? There is no direct option from Florence to Amalfi/Positano? Also, how much was the the private transfer from Naples to Amalfi?

When we vacationed in this area, we opted for Sorrento as our base. Good choice for us - as others have stated, the location for visiting Capri, Pompeii, the archaeological museum in Naples, day trips to Positano, Ravello, Amalfi couldn't have worked out better. We took the train to Pompeii and Naples, ferry to Capri, and a small group van excursion to Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi.
I didn't find it more or less touristy than any other area we visited - there are tourists everywhere along this gorgeous stretch of Italy. You will love it! We stayed at Antiche Mura in Sorrento, which worked well for us. In any case, you will have a wonderful adventure. Happy travels - and do report back to us!

If your goal is seeing as much of the highlights of the AC as possible, then perhaps Sorrento makes sense for you as a hub.
If after Venice/Florence etc. and before Rome you would like to pause, rest, enjoy the views, then IMO consider staying in Amalfi, Positano (Le Sirenuse is magnificent if you want to spend that) or Ravello--out of the way for touring, but perfect for hanging out with views.
Our first trip we stayed in Amalfi at Luna Convento for 3 nights; we got to Capri and Pompeii in a rental car.
This last trip (March) we stayed for 6 nights in Ravello and 2 in Positano. The b&b had magnificent views and 6 nights cost as much as 1 at Le Sirenuse!
This last trip we didn't get a car and we used Positano Car Service from Naples Airport to Ravello (about $150) and from Positano to Naples Train Station when we left, probably around $120 if memory serves. We took the Sita bus from Ravello to Amalfi and back during our Ravello time.
We did drive through Sorrento en route to Naples and IMO no comparison to staying in the more coastal areas but again it really depends on your priorities (sightseeing vs. relax and see the views).
As others have said, September is very much high season.

No - the best and most cost effective option is train Florence to Salerno (via Rome and Naples there is no direct service) and then take a ferry from Salerno. Unlike Sorrento, Salerno has multiple ferries along the coast at convenient times.
The Amalfi Coast has no train line - unlike Cinque Terre.

Armando- curious what was the verdict?
I am thinking of doing something similar next summer. Will be arriving from Rome and will have about 3 nights to spare in this region. After this, we will head to Greece to mainly spend time in the Greek Islands (about 10 days). Also, please note we went to Cinque Terre this year so I do want to go to this region to compare the two. All recommendations are welcomed!
