silly question regarding the VAT

I realize this is probably a silly question but I've read about shopping in stores that will refund the VAT but what about hotels and car rental companies?

VAT is only refunded on purchases that you take out of the country.

Obviously, it cannot be refunded on hotel, restaurant or auto-rental bills.

Namanka. I might be mistaken but I think in Portugal we had to spend a certain amount of money in one store to have the VAT refunded.
I believe it was about E65 in one store. They gave us the form and we turned it in at the airport. It didn't take long to receive the refund.

Yes, in most countries you have to spend a minimum amount in one store to get a VAT refund.

Looking in my local branch of BHS (British Home Stores) this week there was a sign that said 'over £50'.
Hope this is helpful.
