WE did not visit Sardinia, but we were two weeks in Sicily in May 2009. Loved it. We had not a car, but it was very easy to travel by bus. I received a lot of advices in this forum and in Tripadvisor forum of Sicily (it will be very useful to have a look there, it is very informative) about travelling by bus. Clean, safe, in time, comfortable.

I see that you are not interested to vist Palermo, but we loved it, as well Monreale.

We stayed in B&B in Palermo, Taormina and Ortigia. Not more than 70 Euro per night, with A/C, clean and central located.

From Siracusa (Oritgya) we visited Noto, a small baroque beautiful town.
From Taormina we visited Castelmola (15 min. by bus) and also took a day tour to Agrigento and Piazza Armerina - very interesting.
