Should we go to Romania in October?
My husband and I are considering going to Romania to build houses for Habitat for Humanity. The build will take place in early October in Vaideeni, a commune located in Valcea County, in the foothills of the Transylvania Mountains, 118 miles northwest of Bucharest. Is this a nice part of the country and a good time to go there?

Thanks for the suggestions, Whitehall.
I think we're going to do this, so would appreciate suggestions of other things to see and do and how to get around. It's likely that they'll organize a "post-build" excursion for whoever in the Habitat team would like to go. We, personally, like hiking and bicycling, as long as they're not super-challenging.

Extracted from my Trip Report is a must-see for you...
A must, must see in Sibiu is the outdoor Astra Museum [Muzeul Satului], which is basically a working recreation of a traditional Transylvanian old village, with a couple of lakes thrown in. We spent almost 3 hours there, it was raining for most of the time, but we loved it. Ticket is £3. There a decent restaurant onsite, and a couple of refreshment huts. Get there from a bus stop right outside the train station, busNo.13, takes about 25 minutes, get off at the final stop right opposite the entrance. We got the the 0947 bus there and 1338 bus back to Sibiu. Bus ticket is 2 Ron each way, buy from machine by the bus stop [don't forget to validate. as soon as you get on the bus].

Nope, it's not at a tram terminus. Though I think [not certain] that there is a tram line running past it to one of the outlying small towns.
The outdoor museum is easy to reach by bus from outside Sibiu train station.

We went on a rainy miserable day, but still found the whole experience fascinating. Stayed for 3 hours I think, but could easily have lingered much longer.

Is this the place you visited?
The reason I ask is that it had one of the best crafts shops we encountered in Romania. Interestingly, I was not particularly impressed with the skansen itself, but they may have improved the exhibits since we were there.

"A must, must see in Sibiu is the outdoor Astra Museum [Muzeul Satului], which is basically a working recreation of a traditional Transylvanian old village,"
In fact the houses come from all over Romania(not only Transylvania) and it's not a recreation of one village, but the houses(and mills, workshops, etc) are organised into thematic groups.
A defunct tram line runs past.
