Linda,

I agree that Mexico is not even remotely close to the same as Spain. I do know that some people think that because the language is similiar the countries are as well and I applaud you for being open minded.

Spain is my favorite European country, and if I were you I would not miss the opportunity to visit. A great area of Spain that is often overlooked is Santiago de Compostella and surrounding villages. Alot of history and the quaintness you describe. Very close to the border of Portugal, if you desire.

Spain is know for it's great seafood and if you visit Santiago be sure to try the barnacles that are a local favorite, and can only be found in that region and the rough cold shores of Northern Ireland.

look at some websites for lodging.. www.toprural.com, www.paradores.es,

look for castles in spain, and i think you will get a good idea visually of what to expect.

prices are good here in the outskirts and small towns. for example, up north a "casa rural" for two is about 36-40 euros for two people, w/wo breakfast.

in large cities you can sleep for 50 euros/double if you are lucky.

trains and buses are cheaper than some other countries.

and there are daily menus for about 6-12 euros, including three plates down to the dessert.

so, you will be able to stay within a budget if you need to .

but when is this trip? call the spanish tourist bureau, (chicago and l.a.)or go online.. and they will send you freemaps and booklets for the regions you ask about.
sorry i dont have that website.

Hi Linda
There is no way a trip to Spain would be a "waste" As the others have said there is great diversity in the scenery and architecture. Particularly interesting, in my own opinion, is Andalucia and its moorish heritage. I dont know anyone who went to Spain that was not impressed by the Spaniards and their love of life. I hope you take the opportunity to spend a few weeks in Spain and fall in love with this fascinating country as many of us have.
