I suggest you get a guide book and see what is interesting to you. You should realize that it is not a small country and you should concentrate on three areas if you are staying two weeks.
Spain is really many countries with diverse histories, languages, and cultures. So read up a bit.

As already noted, Spain has a very diverse culture. There are several distinct regions; Andalucía (actually two regions in one), Catalunya, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja, Aragon, Asturias and Cantabria, Galicia, Extremadura, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Murcia, the Balearic Islands, the Canaries, Ceuta and Melilla (Spanish exclaves in North Africa), and finally Madrid, the cultural center of Spain.

Robert, not to parse words but Madrid has the best museums in Spain but it is not the cultural center. To me it is more of the business and governmental center. As you noted the culture varies from region to region.

amoliver - would highly recommend a visit to the Pileta Caves just outside of Ronda for a huge taste of the history the area brings. It was one of the best places we have visited; it showcased the culture by how proud and respectful the locals are of this amazing site(access is limited to preserve the cave's integrity). Its a set of caves, so technically not outdoors, but it provides such an incredible human connection to our past history...
In general, Spain is easy to travel within, whether driving or train or bus - you will have an amazing time!
