Shopping in Cesky Krumlov

In some older posts I read where crystal was cheaper in Cesky Krumlov than in Prague. Now that Cesky Krumlov seems to be such a popular place, I would like to know if anyone who has been there recently thinks the prices for crystal/leaded glass are better than Prague. Cesky Krumlov is at the end of our trip, and if would certainly be more convenient to buy the crystal there, but I don't want to pass up a good selection and good prices in Prague and then be disappointed with the prices, etc. in Cesky Krumlov. Thanks.

I don't know in that I haven't been there for two years, but even then I didn't notice anything cheaper there than in Prague. IN fact, I think things cost more as you would expect in a very small town like that. There were only a few shops with limited selection. Crystal is very very cheap in Prague to begin with, I can't imagine you getting it much cheaper. Maybe for very expensive stuff that you are making a major investment in (like a chendelier) that might make sense (if there were such items in CK, I don't really know as I didn't look) but for wineglasses or something they were only about $5 in Prague to begin with.

I haven't been there but I think I read that there were a lot of crystal stores and good prices in Karlovy Vary, that might be a better place if you want to shop a lot for crystal. Cesky Krumlov is a very small town packed with tourists, that seems to be the main business there, so don't expect a lot of great shopping (or dining).

Christina, thanks for the input. I had no idea the crystal would be that inexpensive - approx. $5 a stem. Also, we are using your recommendation for the Maximillan Hotel. Can't wait.

We were in both places 2 years ago and spent a lot of time looking at crystal. Yes, for the most part, prices are very cheap. We actualy waited and purchased uin czesky Krumlov. But, caution you are not going to find the types of styles of glassware that are available in the US. We were looking for something fairly simple, and most of the glassware was very elaborately cut in traditional patterns. There was not very much of what they referred to as "modern". Do a search on google and you can find a few sites that feature Czech crystal so you can get an idea of styles and prices before you go. Also, even if you do not intend to purchase there, visit the Moser shop in Prague just to see the incredibly beautiful art nouveau building they are located in. By the way, Moser is one of the most expensive brands and costs are comparable to what you might see here.
