Seeking Comments On Iceland Itinerary
A group of 15 family members is visiting Iceland this June, including a visit to the family homestead. My fathers parents immigrated to Canada in the late 1800s. The group consists of a wide age range the first generation born in Canada (my father and his brother ages 91 and 89!), about a dozen of us cousins and spouses (45-55) i.e. the sons and daughters of the first generation and a couple of teenagers from the third generation.
The following itinerary has been suggested by a travel agent would appreciate any comments regarding hotels/sites/etc. I've looked at the various postings here (including "100 Best things") and have the Lonely Planet book.
Day 1: Arrive Keflavik, pick up 4 rental cars. Drive from Keflavik to Hveragerdi and stay for three nights at Hotel Ork.
Days 2 & 3 : Visit Geysir, Gullfoss and Thingvellir and the surrounding area.
Visit Thjorsardalur or the south shore. Or spend some time at the Blue Lagoon and tour the interesting Reykjanes Peninsula.
Day 4: Drive to Akureyri. When you pass Hrutafjordur stop for lunch at Stadarskali before you continue on to Akureyri. Guesthouse Akureyri for 3 nights.
Day 5 & 6: Visit Lake Myvatn, Husavik and surrounding area. Visit to Svartarkot (Family Home) and Aldeyjarfoss and maybe spend some time exploring Akureyri.
Day 7: Driving back along the main road, take the time to stop in Hofsos, and visit the Icelandic North American Immigration centre before continuing on to the Hvammstangi area for one night. Hotel - Fosshotel Aning.
Day 8: Drive from Hvammstangi area to Isafjordur - 2 nights at Hotel Isafjordur.
Day 9: Visit Bolungarvik and Isafjordur areas.
Day 10: Drive to Flokalundar and take the ferry to Stykkisholmur - Hotel Framnes for one night
Day 11: Drive around the scenic Snaefellnes peninsula as you make your way back to Reykjavik - Plaza hotel for two nights.
Day 12: Visiting in and around Reykjavik.
Day 13: Return to North America.
Thanks!
