Scotland - Stirling Area Hotel
Sheila and Janis..need your help or anyone else with an idea.

Need to find a nice hotel in the 100 pound range or less with good food for the first night of our trip. We arrive in Glasgow at 8:00 a.m. and figured the first day we would take it easy since we don't sleep well on airplaines. We are planning on heading to the Stirling area first but it's difficult on a map to figure out how far...driving time to Stirling area. Other than the castle in Stirling we're not sure there's enough there to keep us busy all day.

One that we are considering is the Leny House in Callander but that's even harder to judge the distance, plus we need a ground floor room or an elevator. How long would it take to drive to Callander from Stirling?

The Inverberg in Loch Lomond looks very nice but it doesn't look like there is any easy way to get back on the route over to Stirling from there without going back towards Glasgow.

Thanks for your suggestions, you gals do a great service for all the wiery travelers.

All the way from GLA to Stirling is only about 45 miles so you won't have any trouble.

I would highly recommend the Lake Hotel at the Port of Menteith - BUT I don't think there are any ground floor rooms.

Leny House would be fine - Callander is about 20 miles from Stirling.

There is sooooo much to see in the area don't worry about finding enough to keep you busy. Over the years I have probably spent upwards of 5 or 6 weeks near Callander (on Loch Ard) and still haven't seen everything.

Just a few miles further north and off to the right, a few miles up Glen Eagles is the Tormaukin, which is one of my favourite country hotels. very good food and good wine list. They have nice rooms in a ground floor extension out to the side.

I don't do hotels in Scotland much, so can't be of great use. The Golden Lion in Stirling would be my pick, for location and price, but it's years since I was there, and I'm less thn certain. If you got a good rate at the Hydro in Dunblane, you might like that. It's one of the old spa type hotels- very grand.

The furthest of these is the Tormaukin and you'd do that easily in an hour. You have Bannockburn at Stirling as well as the castle, Doune castle, Gleneagles Hotel (worth a visit to look around), Dollar Glen and Castle Campbell and lots of nice scenery too, all in the immediate vicinity

Hope this helps.

Janis has obviously never tried to drive through Glasgow on the M8 during the morning rush? hour. Be prepared to be stuck in a long traffic jam which usually only clears after 10am. Once you get over the Kingston bridge it should take you only 35-40 minutes to get to Stirling

Chas: you certainly don't need to drive from GLA through Glasgow to get where Karen is going. Straight over the Erskine Bridge to the A82 to the A811 and they will be in Stirling (or Callander) before they know it.

Karen: Most of Sheila's site are to the east and north of Stirling. But there is a TON to see in the area between Stirling and Loch Lomond - the Lake of Mentieth and Inchmahome Priory, Doune Castle, Loch Katrine and many other places. With her and my brief lists you can see there is MUCH to see and do.
