In my opinion, London is one of the "cheapest" places to visit, as I hardly ever need any "professional entertainment" there.
The whole world in one place, food from everywhere at every street corner, etc. etc.

1- Most of the museums and galleries are free so you can spend hours sightseeing w/o spending a penny.

2- W/ a train ticket or some types of London Transit passes you can get 2 for 1 entry into a lot of teh for-pay sites.

and 3- places like Marks and Spencer, Pret a manger and some department stores have excellent prepared sandwiches and other take-out food.

Take advantage of the two-for-one entrance offers for many sights. Major museums are free. London Walks are about 6.5 pounds and are a great way to learn more about specific areas of the city.

Where do you find out information on what sites are 2 for 1 with a train ticket or pass?

London Walks do fantastic and intersting 2-2.5 hour walks through many areas. We love them and they only cost 6 pounds. www.walks.com

Buy a copy of Time Out. It will tell you about special events - many of which are free. It also has a lot of money off coupons and two for ones.

See the tower of London, then leave for Yorkshire.

Get free tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys, the ritualistic evening locking-up ceremony at the Tower of London. Go to the Tower website and get directions on ordering tickets through the mail. You will have to plan in advance to get them.

- Take advantage of your large English breakfast if it's included with room, and if not, bigger lunches will always be cheaper than dinner.
- Explore all the wonderful parks from Hampstead to Regent's Park. Walking along the Thames is an amazing way to really see London.
- You can attend sessions at the Old Bailey and have a dose of 'reality' courtroom - British style.
- the entertainers at Covent Garden can take up an entire day;
- however, don't scrimp on your theatre ticket - check Theatre Monkey for great reviews of the best and the worst seats: www.theatremonkey.com/BuyorAvoidIndex.htm

Maureen's absolutely right about the Ceremony of the Keys! Absolutely free, and only a handful of people get to experience it each night. Get your tickets early by mail.

Lunchtime concerts are free (donations requested) at St. Martin's in the Field in Trafalgar Square. Their website has the full concert schedule.
