Sardinia stay & itinerary
We are flying into Alghero on 12th September for 1 week and are looking for some suggestions for hotel, sights to see and some tips on nightlife.
We are looking for a beach hotel preferably and as we don't drive we would like something that is either close to the town or within easy distance by public transport. Price should be 200 euros per night or less.
We are also hoping to get some information on the nightlife potential in Alghero and tips of best sights to see (again without car)
Thanks

Congratulations for selecting Alghero at such a good time of the year! I bet you're flying in from London on Ryanair! Here are some possibilities which satisfy your requirements:
In order of vicinity to Alghero, the following beach hotel-resorts:
1. www.hotelpuntanegra.it (4 stars)
7 kms. from Alghero
Breakfast and Dinner for two in double room: Euro 180/nite
2. www.hoteldeipini.it (4 stars)
10 kms. from Alghero
Breakfast and Dinner for two in double room: Euro 200/nite
3. www.hotelportoconte.com (3 stars)
12 kms. from Alghero
Breakfast and Dinner for two in double room: Euro 140/nite
Next door to the Hotel Porto Conte are the Hotel Corte Rosada, also 3-stars, and the very expensive Hotel Del Faro (superior 4-star)
Front-facing rooms at the first two properties look out over the Bay and the City of Alghero in the distance.
Front-facing rooms at the Hotel Porto Conte look out over the sheltered Bay of Porto Conte (no view of Alghero).
All three properties can be reached by public bus from Alghero. One-way fare is 88 cents. The bus stops smack in front of Hotel Punta Negra and Hotel Porto Conte. It's a 600 yard walk to the Dei Pini from the bus stop. All three hotels are within a 3-5 minute drive from the airport (you could almost walk to the airport w/o luggage from Punta Negra). The last bus from Alghero back towards Porto Conte departs Alghero at 23:30, so you can experience the night life in Alghero whilst staying in one of the resort hotels by the beach.
If you prefer to stay in Alghero proper, there are two excellent choices:
1. www.hotelcatalunya.it (4 stars)
Two blocks from the old town, Holiday Inn-type business hotel, multi-storey. Top floor rooms have good views over the Bay. Bed and Breakfast: 98 Euros in a double room.
2. www.sanfrancescohotel.com (2 stars, with a/c)
Perhaps the most charming of all the hotels in the area, the 20 rooms surround the 15th century cloister of the church. Bed and breakfast: 80 Euros in a double room.
From Alghero, you can visit the spectacular Grottoes of Neptune by bus or by boat (the bus conveniently stops in front of hotels Punta Negra and Porto Conte). From Alghero, you can also do a day trip by bus to Sassari, to Bosa, to Porto Torres, and even to Castelsardo (changing buses in Sassari).

Yes, flying with Ryan air. Booked our flights ages ago but now finding it a bit difficult to find a suitable available hotel! Thanks for the hotel suggestions, the Catalunya unfortunately is full already and we really did fancy a 4*. We had looked at the Carlos V (heard bad things about it???)and the Porto Conte hotel. Can you advise if the bus services to Porto Conte are regular and reliable and are they frequent in September? El faro was full unfortuntely. Another 2 were Hotel Capocaccia and Hotel Baia di Conte.
How about the restaurants, bars etc of Alghero. Is there a decent array of them?

Fi: too bad that the Hotel Catalunya is full. Mid-September is still high season in Alghero. Have you tried the Hotel San Francesco?
I stayed at the Hotel Carlos V for five nights, and can tell you that it's rather run-down for a 4-star (lack of maintenance), and the breakfast is disappointing as well. It must have been a grand place when it opened in 1970, but it's been through trying times. The a/c did not work much at all, but the views from the FRONT facing rooms are very nice, and the rates are acceptable. However, it's a long walk into town (15-20 mins.) which is uncomfortable under the hot midday sun. If you're in town for a whole week, I would recommend that you skip this hotel.
You can look up the bus schedule between Alghero and Poto Conte on www.infoalghero.it Basically, there are a couple of buses in the morning, midday, late afternoon, and into the evening. You should be aware that the last two hotels you mentioned, Baia di Conte and Capocaccia, are further west, beyond the Porto Conte area, and reachable by only three buses per day (schedules under Capo Caccia heading).
Your best bet logistically would be either Hotel Punta Negra, Hotel Porto Conte or Hotel Corte Rosada. Only Punta Negra is 4 stars. I visited Punta Negra by bus from Alghero. The bus lets you off at the front gate, directly on the highway which goes to Porto Conte. The very same bus proceeds west to the three hotels along the shores of Porto Conte, turning around at the terminus (Hotel El Faro). The three different buses which go all the way to Capo Caccia also stop at Punta Negra and at Porto Conte.
The restaurants in the old town are pretty good. I particularly liked the Ristorante La Lepanto, along the ramparts. Bear in mind that you'll be dining at your hotel if you choose one of the beach hotel-resorts (but you could still have lunch in Alghero).

P.S.: You won't have any trouble finding bars in Alghero, the town is full of them, many are filled with young Brits and other foreigners into the early morning hours. There were a couple of loud places along Via Dante, not far from the Hotel Carlos V. Also lots of broken beer bottles, sort of like Brighton during the summer .......

GAC, thanks so much for all this info. Think i am now swaying towards Porto Conte, although my friend has been recommended the Rina (?) in Alghero as she really doesn't want to go below a 4 star and we heard bad things about the Punta Negra (minimal airconditioning & dirty beach.I will get someone to translate the web page you mentioned for me as my italian is pretty basic.
If we get a reasonable hotel price then I don't mind popping into Alghero for dinner a few nights so your recommendataion will be useful.

Fi: While I have not visited either the Rina or the Soleado, I know where they're located (about 1 kilometre north of Alghero, along the "Lido"
and approximately what to expect. Soleado is strictly bed and breakfast, and is rather small, with only 32 rooms. Rina is larger (80 rooms) and offers half and full board, and is 4-stars. Both are located in urban areas. Both are significantly less expensive than the hotels further out. In my opinion, the only reason to stay along the Lido is to be within walking distance of the Old Town (not to have to rely on the bus schedule), and to save money. Otherwise, the larger, resort-type properties previously mentioned should be more enjoyable, and the water is cleaner the farther out from Alghero you travel.
One aspect of the Hotel Punta Negra which I did not like was the fact that there are cheap apartment buildings on a bluff about 300 yards to the left of the private beach, which are a bit of an eyesore.
Hotel Dei Pini is much more isolated and has much cleaner water, but has the disadvantage of not being on the main road, hence a short walk to the bus stop (maybe inconvenient at night)
The Hotel Porte Conte may indeed be your best bet, even though it's a 3-star and probably attracts many more Italian families, due to its lower rates. The water here should be very clean, the environment is fairly rustic and casual, and the bus service is reliable and cheap. The modern bus, which stops in front of the hotel, will take you to Alghero in 25 minutes.
Wherever you decide to stay, I strongly encourage you to post a review.

Hi there!
I would also suggest to have a look at www.algherohotels4less.com for a wide choise of 3 star and 4 star hotels in Alghero.
My personal recommendation would be the http://www.algherohotels4less.com/ho...las_las_tronas Hotel - simply charming!
Good luck!!
