Recent visitors to Gran Porto Real?

Anyone out there a recent visitor to Gran Porto in PDC? I am planning a trip in mid-January and I was loooking some honest feedback not given by a travel agent. Photos would be greatly appreciated since the resort sites only have the best possible angles for the pics they post. Any info greatly appreciated. I have been to Cancun and I really am interested in PDC for a change of scenery. I am really looking for a 2nd honeymoon atmosphere.
Thanks - annadll

It is a couple of years since we stayed at the hotel. We liked it - I think it is about a three and half star. If you do stay at the Gran Porto Real make sure that you get a junior suite - not a hotel room. The suites are huge and have ocean views - rooms are nowhere near as nice. The hotel is right on the beach, though at that point the beach is a little narrow. Next door is a new hotel - Royal Porto Real - same owners I think but more expensive.

I stayed at Gran Porto Real in the last two years. It is a very nice hotel. I loved it. We had a room offered at the new site across the street and the room had a spa in it, beautifully decorated, but I wanted to be nearer the pool. We had your run of the mill room, but it was nice. We didn't stay in the room that much. I very much recommend this hotel. It is really pretty. I stay in cancun at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach and it is like the Venetian at Las Vegas, But I like PDC and this hotel better. 5th Avenue in PDC is fun and close to the beach.

Thank you for your input. I wonder how both the GPR and the RPR faired the hurricane. Does anyone know of a site for me to find out?

Reports are that Playa was severely damaged. Doubt resorts will be up and running by then. I would re-schedule elsewhere. Both Grand Cayman and Grenada still trying to recover from Ivan last year -- it's going to take quite a while for Playa.

Iam planning a trip to Playa del Carmen in early December. Do you think the hotel Iberostar Toucan will be up and running, or should my family go to another destination ? Thanks

thanks Eileen...I really haven't seen to much coverage on the news anywhere about Mexico...I do know that the streets in PDC were flooded the past couple of days. I guess I need to start looking elsewhere...pegm--I would probably give the resort a direct call. I hadn't booked m

we stayed at grand porto real 3 years ago for our honeymoon and it was the best trip I have ever had. The service was exceptional and the resort itself was wonderful. I have read reviews where people hated it, but my trip was nothing short of perfect.

annadll if you are going to reschedule your trip to another area consider Old Town Puerto Vallarta. You can see by these postings how popular PV is. Even if GPR is OK after the storm, it will be awhile before the rest of the town and things close by will be restored. It would be a shame to go to PDC and miss going to Cozumel. But Cozumel is not faring too well right now and it will certainly be awhile. good luck.
