Santorini, second vs third week of June?
Hi everyone,
I am planning a trip to Santorini and Mykonos in June (2011). I hate the heat and cannot possibly enjoy myself when the weather's too hot (I'm very particular about this). At the same time, I want it to be hot enought to be able to enjoy swimming. So, which is better, second or third week of June for travelling to the Greek islands? Is the second week warm enough to enjoy water activities while being pleasant? For me, the ideal temperature is 73-76, but I realize that's not hot enough for swimming; so I'm willing to be a little uncomfortable outside of water for the sake of being able to get in the water.
Please let me know which week would work better for me. Plus, is the water going to be cold any way regardless of which week I choose, or is it gonna be swimmable?

For the sake of being able to get in the water go the 3rd week of June. The water will be slightly warmer then. However, the outside temperature can be a lot hotter than 73-76. Expect it to be in the mid-80's then and perhaps even hotter. It will be only slightly cooler the 2nd week of June.

One week won't make much difference in sea temperatures (maybe 1-2 deg F at most). Air temperatures are a different thing. I'm usually on the Greek islands in mid-June, and have found there is sometimes a heat wave about that time. It's really 'luck of the draw', as temperatures vary from year to year, but you are less likely to get hot weather during the second week than the third.
I have created a Weather Underground trip planner for you showing weather on Mykonos in the 8-22 June period. The top of the page shows averages, and the bottom actual temperatures over the last several years:

We were on Santorini during the third week of June a few years ago and it was very hot but the sea water was very cold to the point of almost uncomfortablem even though we were so hot. We are going back to Greece this year but in September when I think the water temps will be better.

As I said, I'm willing to give up my ideal temperature of 73-76 for the sake of swimming, but I'm not sure if I can go as high as mid-80's
