San Giorgio Maggiore

Hello,

I'll be in Venice for a few days in August and was thinking about spending a morning at San Giorgio Maggiore. Does anyone know if it is possible to tour the old monastery?

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure, but I do know that the photo ops from the Campanile are to die for.

If you are open to attending Mass there, San Giorgio Maggiore has a very nice chanted Mass on Sunday. Unfortunately, I can't recall the time. Probably 11:00 a.m., though.

you can tour the monastery which is now the Cini Foundation on Sat & Sun. I did this tour in nJanuary 06 and it was wonderful. Info here: www.cini.it/indexe.html (click on guided tours at the bottom of the page)

Thanks for the information, everyone. Maryk, the site says that tours are given every hour. Do you recall if English was offered every hour?

We just visited S giorgio Maggiore last week when we were in Venice. So worth the 5 minute vaproetto trip from St. Mark's stop. The views were gorgeous and the monastary fascinating. Don't miss it!

San Giorgio Maggiore is, as I've posted many times, a must-see for Venice, just as Ca' Rezzonico, a tour of La Fenice and the Doge's Palace. The views from the Campanile are to die for, the artwork is stunning inside the Basilica, but now, most people do NOT do the Cini Foundation tour-and this is SOMETHING TO SEE.

The President of Italy, who was coming into Venice just as I was leaving this past March, had on his itinerary a visit to the Cini Foundation, so take maryk's advice and GO THERE. Also, as Peg says, the chanted mass (which is at 11am on Sunday, I believe) is a very special experience.

I agree - fabulous shots from the Campanile!

It's very quiet there - it's a great place to spend the dreaded 10AM-4 PM slot, while the cruises are taking over St. Mark's!
