Salerno, Italy train station/taxis?

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone knows how plentiful taxis are at the Salerno train station, and how much it costs to travel to Ravello? We have the option of taking a limo for 80 Euros, but it seems like a taxi would cost a lot less. Any opinions? (We're arriving probably late Tuesday afternoon)
Thanks!
PamR

It's a bustling little station, so I don't think you'd have a problem hailing a taxi. Sorry I can't help you with the cost to Ravello by taxi, but you could walk right over to the dock and take a ferry to Positano.

Maybe someone will post info on the ferry schedule or you could type Amalfi coast and ferry into the search box

Hi Pam,

I would guess that a taxi from Salerno to Ravello would be a small fortune.

About 3 blocks from the train station is the ferry stop to Amalfi. From Amalfi you take the bus to Ravello.

Salerno (P.zza della Concordia) ? Amalfi: 3.5 E 35 min
08,40 ? 09,40 - 11,30 ? 14,10 ? 15,30

You can also take a bus from the train station to Amalfi, about 3E.

Hi PamR: The Salerno train station is located right in the middle of town, so it's convenient. When I was there 6 months ago, we stayed at the Hotel Plaza, a 3* hotel across the street. There were many taxis in the circle turn-around outside the station.

There are a couple alternative transportation options available to you. Ravello is up in the hills above Amalfi. You might consider 1) taking the SITA bus from Salerno directly into Ravello. If you choose the bus option, you can buy the tickets right outside the train station (if exiting, the office will be on your R side) and the bus stop is right there. 2) You can walk down the few blocks to the dock and catch a boat over to Amalfi, then a bus up the hill to Ravello. Lastly, if you choose a taxi, it will be expensive, but surely not as much as paying a limo 80 euros!

Thanks, Ira and Huitres, for explaining the ferry option so much more accurately than I did. I think taking the ferry would be a much more romantic entry to the Amalfi coast than would a taxi or bus.

There are no direct bus services from Salerno to Ravello. You will need to take the bus from Salerno to Amalfi where you change to a smaller bus for the 25 minute journey here to Ravello. For ferry information go to WWW.metrodelmare.com and for bus information WWW.sita-on-line.it

Thanks for all the great information. In view of our luggage, I think we would skip the idea of the ferry. We may end up skipping the Salerno option and just take the limo from Naples--not that much more expensive, and a great entry into the area. If we're energetic that day, we might try the buses. Nice to know we could go the taxi route if we have to.
Thanks again, Everyone.

I'm posting a follow-up in case anyone else is planning a similar move. There were plenty of taxis at the Salerno train station but as Ira predicted, it did "cost a small fortune" to get to Ravello. It was close to 100 euros when all was said and done (96 with tip, I believe). The driver was careful and good, though. So a pre-arranged limo would have been cheaper. If I ever travel with people who don't have much luggage, I'd try the other options. I've learned to travel pretty light but none of my friends have. One person just can't haul 2-3 heavy suitcases onto a crowded bus or move them a few blocks to a station or pier. We also encountered a real hassle trying to move luggage from the train platform in Salerno into the station area, below. The only way to get there is by a long stairway. We found no one who could help -- until a fellow passenger took pity and did. Hopes this helps someone with the same question. Ciao.

Hi Pam,

I hope that your friends have learned not to travel with more luggage than they can carry.
