Candy,

There's a good take-away chippie (that's "carry out fish and chip shop" in American) located right on the harbour. It certainly is not fancy, but the locals appear to like it and the fish is presumably fresh.

The Landgate Bistro, mentioned by another posting, is pretty good, as I recall.

Rye is a very compact town...you should be able to walk it very easily and peer at the menus of most restaurants.

We stayed at Cadborough farm B&B just outside of town. We loved it. It is rated the same as Jeake's House by the AA, if that is any help.

Regards,

David White
www.KidsToLondon.com

We stayed at Jeake's House 4 years ago. It is on one of the most charming streets in town. We had a great room with crooked floors but a lot of charm. The innkeeper was gracious. She'll serve you a great breakfast (her cats may visit you at breakfast but they really were not annoying). We did try the Fish and Chips eatery (can't remember the name) by the harbour. It doesn't look like much but the fish is very fresh and the locals love it. Enjoy Rye. It is such a charming village. Don't forget to visit the church and square surrounded by lovely homes. We sat in the cemetary (in the church yard) and enjoyed the wonderful flowers and peace.

Stayed at Jeake's house in Rye three or four years ago. Enjoyed it. Watch the phone, though. International access calls are blocked from the hotel. YOu have to go through their switchboard. Not cheap.

As for food - Rye Lodge has a superb dining room. Stayed (and ate) there last year. Superb food and service. Rooms were great, also, though not cheap.

I would have to second the Landgate Bistro. Really good food, especially their seafood. If I recall correctly...they are closed Sundays and Mondays, so you might want to check ahead.

You may also want to try The Mermaid, which is a very old inn.. six or seven centuries old I think? It has a smuggling connection too...check the corners for hidden gold <g> They have a pub and a restaurant, and is on, funnily enough, Mermaid Street.

Enjoy your stay in Rye!

Anastasia
http://www.greatbritaintravelguide.com

Do not go to this restaurant unless you want overpriced poor quality food, served by immature waiters who look as if they have just got out of bed. If you have lots of money to waste, and enjoy people with bad, or few, manners go ahead.
