Is train travel from the airport (FCO) to Termini Station safe and reliable in late August? We are concerned about the station and the conveniences due to a physical limitation. Specifically, does the station have elevators / escalators? Are there lots of steps to get from the train to a taxi? We will be wheeling a total of three bags. So basically, the question is: Does it make sense to save the money by taking the Express train?

I believe most trains have 3 steps from the car to the platform. One person should descend and the other person in the car hands down the luggage then descends him/herself.

After exiting the train, there should be one step to the taxi at Termini and that is off the curb.

There are elevators at Termini.

By the time you add a taxi (with 2 Euro surcharge for departure from Termini and 1 Euro surcharge for your third bag) to the fare of 22 Euro for two people for the train, the saving hardly seems worth the hassle.

Depending on what time you arrive at Termini you could wait in the taxi line for 20 to 30 minutes. Zerlina gives good advice about getting a shuttle.

Is one of you in a wheelchair? The reason I ask, Rome is not the most wheelchair/scooter friendly of places to get around. It can be done, but not easily.

Rome Cabs offers day tours that are well reviewed in travel forums; Rome Shuttle Limousine does not offer tours.

No, not in a chair. My husband gets around with two canes and leg support. Walking short distances is okay, even enjoyable. But struggling up hills (seven of them?) tires him out enough to limit his ability. We like to use the energy at our intended site, not getting there. I do appreciate your interest.

For more than one people plus a lot of luggage I would just get a car from the airport versus all the hassle of the train. the cost will be very little- if any - more by the time you get a cab from the train to your hotel.

I think they may also do tours.

If you take the train from the airport, use the very first car behind the engine as there are no steps for it (just the one to get on). The other cars have about 3 steps which are narrow.
