Rome to Ravello/Amalfie
What is the best way to go from Rome, Italy to Amalfie? (time is limited...we want to spend time on the coast aftyer 5 days in Rome) Also, for those who have "been there"
where would you choose to stay...Amalfie or Positano?

Barbara,

Depending on your budget, obviously the easiest and quickest way would be to hire a car to pick you up in Rome and drive you to the coast. This will take about two-three hours, unless there's lots of traffic. Several drivers have been recommended on this forum, and my husband and I used two of them, the Gargiulos, with great success. If you'd like their info/numbers, just e-mail. Regarding your second question, I would definitely pick Positano over Amalfi. It's much more picturesque, and again, depending on your budget, offers a larger range of hotels to choose from. There's a great deal of info on the towns, hotels, etc. on the forum. I'm sure you'll find it easily. Good luck, and have a great trip!

From the Salerno train station, there is also the hourly SITA blue bus which goes all the way to Amalfi in 70 minutes. Extremely inexpensive, scenic, and not much slower than a private car. You can also take a ferry boat from Salerno to Amalfi in 30 mins., but you must walk approx. 600 yards to the dock off of Piazza della Concordia.

Don't hire a car. I mean DON'T. Go train to Salerno then ferry to Amalfi. I would stay in Amalfi because time is short. Most of the towns are similar and small. If you travel between towns on the coast do it by bus, but whatever way it will take ages to get anywhere. The only road is narrow and full. But that's the Amalfi Drive of course.

Fred
