I am taking my three 13 year old grandsons to Rome in November for a few days. One of the days we would like to go to Pompeii from Rome either on a shuttle or a bus.

It appears that the agencies in Rome stop going there on October 30. These are trips I found on the Internet. Does anyone have any ideas??

Pompeii daytrips have been discussed in great depth here and there are several ways to skin this cat.I took a daytrip through Context Rome,but I know most people take the train to Naples,then a local to Pompeii.Try a search,you'll find lots of information.

utah-- you are right to want to take your grandsons to Pompeii. I faced the same situation when I took my Mom to Rome in November 2002. Another option is by train. I posted detailed instructions on how to get to Pompeii from Rome by train for a kind dad who is taking his family of four. Take a Trenitalia train from Rome Termini station to Naples. www.trenitalia.com At Naples station transfer to the local Circumvesuviana commuter train which you catch downstairs at the Naples station. Get off at the Pompeii Scavi stop and the entrance is right across the street.

Utah - The least expensive way for 4+ people would be to hire a car.

Otherwise train is your quickest and best option.
You have to change train in Naples and catch the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi.

Rome to Napoli Centrale takes under 2 hrs by Eurostar or Intercity train.
Naples to Pompeii takes approx. 30 mins by Circumvesuviana.

ES Rome-Naples fare is €22.20 each way.
IC fares are cheaper (- and journey time is only 5-10 mins longer).

Naples-Pompeii costs about €1.80 each way.

If cost is an issue you can save € 20+ per person on the Rome-Naples round trip by catching the slower D trains - but journey time is about 50 mins longer each way (i.e approx. 2 hrs 35').

Taking a tour is way overpriced, about double from doing it yourself, and you only spend around 2 hours in Pompeii. The rest of the time is driving. I would take the train. Get a ticket for the Euro (ES) or Rapido to Naples (1.5 hours Non-stop). At Naples, go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana and purchase a ticket to Pompeii. For the return trip, you can purchse the entire ticket in Pompeii.

The ES or Rapido is 2-2.5X the price of the InterCity (IC), but well worth it. I made the mistake of taking the IC to Naples and it took 3 hours, it stops at every stop.

Try to avoid having to wait long in Naples. There is little to do close to the train station, and it is very seedy area.

I don't know when JSLee was in Naples; I was there in 1998. Piazza Garibaldi in front of the train station was not seedy at all and was very safe during the day. A friend (female) and I had lunch at an outside table at one of the restaurants; no one approached or harassed us.

We walked over to a pastry shop on Via Casanova that specialized in sfogliatelle with no problems.

I agree that the area to the right of the station as you face it looks and probably is quite seedy.

The Intercity trains between Roma and Napoli take only slightly longer than the Eurostar trains. Soon (within a year), there will be a new high-speed line between the two cities and journey times will be dramatically reduced; until then, even the hourly, cheap inter-regional trains which stop at most stations are scheduled to take less than three hours.
