One Day - Rome to Pompeii and back

We would like to spend one day in Pompeii during our Rome stay. Is it easy to take the train their on our own instead of paying for a bus tour? All the bus tours seem to stop at Naples and for shopping which we don't want. How hard is it to get from the train station to the actual entrance to the ruins? Are taxis available?

It's a very easy trip from Rome to Pompeii, although a very long one. Take a Eurostar train to Naples (2 hours); go downstairs to get the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii (30 minutes). Make sure you get the train going to Pompeii Scavi (ruins). The train stops at the entrance to the ruins.

Hi Dorgal,

You might want to look at www.enjoyrome.com.

They run a bus from Rome to Pompeii and back without the stops at tourist traps.

Another bus option would be the Marozzi bus(#23 Roma/Sorrento/Amalfi) that departs from Tiburtina station at 7am and cost about 19E one way. I would take the train(ES or IC) from Termini to Naples and then the local Circumvesuviana on to Pompeii. This would allow a more flexible schedule (departure/return times) than the bus or tours. If you want to make a longer day after you leave Pompeii take the CIrcumvesuviana train on to Sorrento and eat dinner before heading back to Naples/Rome.

It isn't hard to get from the Pompeii scavi train stop to the ruins - it is just across the street.

We took the train down to Pompeii for a day from Rome and everything went fine. We took an early Eurostar Italia train from Rome to Naples, hopped on the Circumvesuviana, and got off at the entrance to the ruins. We spent about three hours exploring Pompeii, and were back in Rome by early evening. The travel time from Rome to Naples is about 2 hours on the Eurostar (I definitely recommend this...otherwise you will stop at every town along the way!) and the scenery was beautiful along the way. Pompeii was incredible and fascinating so I would definitely recommend visiting.
