Rome to Pompeii

Still working on my April trip to Italy. Some have recommened seeing Pompeii. Should we stay in Naples or should we just make it a day trip from Rome?

Go to Ostia Antica instead!

It is within a half hour of Rome and it is better IMHO that Pompeii. Pompeii takes too long to get to from Rome and isn't worth it.

Just an opinion...stay in Rome!

US

This is the second time I have tried to get help on Pompeii and didn't see anything. Hope this isn't a sign that I shouldn't go. I'll try again tomorrow.

I mean you can go of course..but to get there from Rome is a fairly long train trip with a change in Naples onto a local to Pompeiio.

Once there, it is somewhat intersting but nothing spectacular. If you do go get a guide. They will hustle you so negotiate and then once done you have to come all the way back to Rome.

Its interesting but Ostia is closer.

OTOH, if you were to stay in Naples it would be closer. There are differing opinions of Naples..that is why I suggest just staying in Rome...a magnificent city!

Hope that helps a bit more!

US

Suego: Thought you needed an opinion other than those above, all from the same person and very one-sided. Try this website to get an idea of what Pompeii is like:

http://touritaly.org/pompeii/pompeii-main.htm

The ES train to Naples from Rome takes about three hours. You transfer to the Circumvesuviana train at Centrale in Naples to get to Pompeii (Pompeii Scavi station). Herculaneum is nearby and certainly worth a visit, but not on a day trip for both.

Perhaps you could spend a night or two in Sorrento and visit both sites leisurely. They are both absolutely wonderful, particularly if you are into Roman history as we are.

Ostia Antica is very interesting too, as is Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli, but if I had to choose only one to visit it would be Pompeii.

I visited Pompeii last winter - I'm glad I did. I took a 2-hr Eurostar to Naples, then changed to the Circumvesuviana local train to Sorrento, about an hour from Naples. I spent the night in Sorrento, in a little hotel near the gare. In the morning, I took the Circumvesuviana about 20 minutes to Pompeii Scavi station, and spent the day there. Very easy. I did end up spending two nights in Sorrento, but I found I needed a full day for Pompeii. I could have taken the train back to Naples at the end of the afternoon, to catch the ES back to Rome.
