Trying to decide between Herculaneum, Pompeii and Antica Ostia
We are going to be having a driver take us from Positano to Rome and on the way wanted to stop and tour some of the ruins in the area. Any thoughts on the best pick between Pompeii, Herculaneum and Antica Ostia? It seems like Antica Ostia is "better preserved" but have never been to Pompeii so not sure if it is the "must see" of the bunch. We have also heard the Herculaneum is very nice and less crowded than Pompeii.
Appreciate any thoughts.

Ostia Antica is a short metro ride from Rome so why not do it once there - Pompeii wins this contest hands down anyway - simply due to its vastness and its history. Actually Ostia Antica is a vast ruins too - to me about as nice as Pompeii but Pompeii has Vesuvius still plopped next to it and corpses turned to cement, etc - yes the grisly aspects if you have it.
Heraclaneum is much small and in a deep hole as I remember it - nice but pales in relation to the other two IMO.

there is a big reason Herculaneum is less crowded - it has much less to offer - though any classical archaeological ruin to me is mesmerizing.

I,m interested in this post because of Ostia Antica
After 3 days in Rome [3rd time there] i head to Naples
and have earmarked both Pompeii plus Herculaneum before
heading to Sicily.
But i have possibly 3 days in Rome before flying home
to Australia.
Could i make a day trip to Ostia Antica whilst in Rome???

Great advice and color. I think we'll stick with Pompeii this trip. May do a quick trip to Antica Ostia from Rome but we're only in Rome three days and since it's at the end of our trip I think I'll be over sightseeing and ready for a little relaxing, gelato, vino and shopping (we've been to Rome a handful of other times and seen most of the sights).
