Rome to Pompeii

What's the best way to get to Pompeii from Rome? How long is the commute?

Take a train to Napoli Centrale (at least one an hour, journey 2-3 hours) then the local Circumvesuvia train to Pompei Scavi - the ruins are across the road from this station. You can check schedules on www.trenitalia.com and www.vesuviana.it.

I should have typed Circumvesuviana. Pompei Scavi is on the line to Sorrento and trains run every half hour, taking about 35 minutes to get from Napoli to Pompei Scavi.

We had a driver take just out family. Ate at an outdoor cafe where everyone knew him.
We have traveled all over and that has been one of our best trips.

Has anyone stopped in Naples to visit the Museum before traveling to Pompeii?

We have taken the circumvesuviana twice. It takes a bit of care.

It is not a regular train with good markings (other than graffiti), etc.

When you go down into the basement of the Naples station to buy the ticket, watch for an electronic board that indicates the track # to Sorrento.

Once on the track don't just take the first train. The trains have no markings and the track is shared by several routes.

Wait until the small electronic board over the track flashes (on and off) 'Sorrento'. That indicates the train is about to enter the station and is the next train on that track.

It will arrive in well under a minute.

Get off as described on a previous post.
