Transport from Frankfurt to Rothenburg

Hello,

my fiancee and I are flying into Frankfurt and would like to take public transit to Rothenburg, if any is available. Are there trains or buses that go that route? We don't think we'll feel comfortable driving in Germany right away (or is driving there not such a big deal?)

Thank you!
Olya.

Hi Olga,

Yes, there is a train that goes that route. 2 stops, I believe. Frankfurt to Wurzburg to Steinach to Rothenburg. Try http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en and plug it your destinations...it's pretty easy!

Not a big deal!!!
We did the same thing: Flew into Frankfurt and drove the Romantic Road to Rothenburg. Let's face it, you KNOW you want to drive the autobahn!
We spluged and rented a Mercedes through AutoEurope (hey, you only live once and it wasn't THAT expensive). The highways can be somewhat congested but the are extremely well-marked. And it is very cool to go 100 mph and have someone blow your doors off!!!

Take a train to Ulm; spend a night there, get your bearings and get past the worst of the time zone adjustment. then rent a car there and you have an easy drive to Rothenburg.

but where are you going from there?

There must be more to this trip than fly into Frankfurt, and then visit Rothenburg, right?

A rented car is the best way to see Germany. But where else are you going?

Best wishes,

Rex
Olya,
Not sure of your driving experience, but it is very easy to drive yourself to Rothenberg. Basically Autobahn the entire way.

If you have a hotel in the center of town, you just have to be a little mindful of the narrow streets.

You can take the train to Wurzburg (sp?), change and head to Steinach, change to a small train that runs from Steinach to Rothenburg. This works rather smoothly, but consider a stop in Wurzburg. There is a palace or some similar structure there, that is supposedly quite impressive (planned to stop, but train problems prevented it).

Thank you very much! We are going to explore the Romantic Road and are planning to spend 2 or 3 nights in Rothenburg and about 3 nights in Fussen. Our whole trip is about a week and we want to have a relaxed pace. Does anyone have any suggestions for things that are best for us to see? (We are definitely visiting Neuschwanstein

Thank you so much!
Olya.

Take notice of little Harburg on the RR between Nordlingen and Munich. J.

My recollection from long ago is that the church in Wies is worth a detour. We somehow approached it on a dirt road, and then discovered that it is a major tourist stop, with a paved road in the other direction and a large parking lot for all the tour buses.

I second the stop at Wieskirche. Try to get there when a service is held--the organ music amongst the ornate architectural features is great. I'm not knowledgable about Catholic services, but we were there around 5 pm as I remember when some sort of service started--and the tour buses had all left by that time.
