I think it is about 150 miles, but better to show you how to find answers like this one (you may have many more driving route/time/mileage questions)

I recommend that you try your hand at

www.viamichelin.com
www.mappy.com

and/or

www.geoshellstar.com

Each is a little different, and each is very good for anyone plannning a driving trip in Europe.

Best wishes,

Rex
It's 187 miles or 302km. Check out this site for other distances.

http://www.initaly.com/ddistml.htm

Yes and no. Leaving Rome can take two hours, or it can take 15 minutes. On second thought, it is coming into rome that can be nerve-wracking, more than leaving. And finding your way into Florence can be daunting to a first timer.

If you choose, you can certainly do the autostrada portion WELL UNDER three hours, maybe even under TWO. A lot of Italians sure do.
Rebecca, Please don't listen to Tom. I've done this trip many times. It's 3 hours. Unless you plan to stop in villages or Siena or San Gimignano I would suggest taking the train from city to city. You don't need a car. If you wan to take day trips you can rent a car in Florence.

Ann:

The drive from ROme to Florence take 2hours, two hours and a half at worst. Maybe even less with the new law that allows cars to reach 150 Kmph on the autostrada. Last time I had to do it, it took us 2 hours or maybe even a bit less. It is tru that it was 6am when we left, but it is also true that we still had the old law allowing less speed on the autostrada.

Hey Ann:

Try shifting gears once in a while... or stop driving in reverse.
