Why am I thinking of the gold ring scam? Make sure you don't drop it or get it lifted away from your pocket.
I think I would like to be proposed to at the Trevi Fountain in the middle of the night. It reminds me of La Dolce Vita then, but I love Rome in the middle of the night when it is empty-ish.
I, too, think Tivoli would be nice also, but during the afternoon.

hi mets,
what a lovely idea - I hope it all goes to plan. I have no bright ideas about where to propose, but DON'T whatever you do, follow it up with a wedding at the church at the top of the capitoline. it is a truly beautiful location, with, when we were there, wisteria in full bloom going up the side of the steps. [now I think about it, a great place to propose in the spring]. However, those very steps which look so lovely prevent the bride from being deposited outside the church doors; rather she has to climb all the way up. we had the joy of watching a bride struggling up them in full rig, whilst shouting at someone down her "telefonino", presumably the idiot who'd had the idea of getting married there. I often wonder if she got to the top, or just gave up half way.

Annhig, I assume you are talking about Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Actually, you do not have to climb the steps. Instead, go up the cordonata to Campidoglio. Walk back to the left, between the Palazzo Senatorio and the Capitoline museum building. Make an immediate left and you'll find the side entrance to the church. Lots more easier than the steps.

Don’t do it! Why waste a perfectly romantic trip to Italy with a proposal of marriage? Within seconds of popping the question your girlfriend’s (I guess she will be your fiancé at that time) mind will immediately turn to window treatments, cribs and how she is going to tell her friends that she just landed you. The romance will be over and the trip will be a bust. If you must ask her to marry you, wait until you are at the airport back home waiting for your luggage. If nothing else, you will have the element of surprise on your side.
Also think about this…what if she says no? That will pretty much put a kibosh on the trip too. You may want to consider travel insurance.

LOL, daveesl, "my" bride didn't know that either. I really feared for her groom when she eventually made it to the top. she was not going to be a happy bunny and I can't say I blamed her. the only good thing was that it wasn't raining.
