My daughter and I are beginning to plan our trip to Rome in October. First we need to find an Air bnb or Vrbo. We must have a tiny balcony bc my daughter smokes. No judgment-I lecture enough. She’s a grown woman. I’ve been a couple of times but it’s difficult to remember where things are. I’m thinking Trastevere but I’m open to experienced travelers. She would like to visit the wonderful icons and eat and drink great food. The “hotel” should be in a place where we can walk to dinner, etc. So, best location especially for using public transportation.

With respect, YOU don't need to find the tiny balcony. Your daughter should investigate the lodging options and make a list of possibilities that accommodate her smoking and suit your other needs (budget, bedrooms, elevator v. stairs, access to laundry, etc.). Then you can think about what part of Rome to be in. We walk everywhere, so a location best for public transportation isn't on my radar.

FYI, by law, smoking is prohibited in nearly every outdoor public area except those specifically designated and signed as "Area Fumatori." Which is not to say you won't smell smoke in many outdoor areas. Smoking is prohibited in closed public areas, and this is better enforced. Dropping/littering butts on the ground is also against the law. There are fines, as much as 250 euros depending on the offense, and they can be doubled if the smoking is near a pregnant woman or child under 12 years.

Your daughter should take some nicotine gum or wear a nicotine patch. That's not a lecture but just common sense.

Can't help with balconies, but all around Piazza Navona are good bus connections. If taking the bus, be sure to validate your ticket. If an inspector comes on board, you will get a fine if you haven't done so, even if you show them the ticket. The last couple times I've been in Rome, there have been more inspectors around.
