Rome Hotels
We are a couple in our sixties and ask can anyone please recommend a good hotel near the Rome Termini for an overnight before going south by train. We want to be able to walk to and from Termini. From what we have read many hotels in the area have been given bad reviews for one reason or another. We have a budget of around Australian $200-$225.
Many thanks

I can suggest you to rent an apartment. http://www.italyrents.com/eng/apartm.../bixio_01.html this is situated near Termini station and it's very pretty and comfortabe; is very close to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele so there you can find the subway to arrive at the centre for example. But if you like to walk colosseum from Termini is at 10 minutes on foot! From the colosseum all is in your hand because you are at centre of the historic centre so Spanish steps, navona's square, campo de fiori (very interesting place for movida with pub, restaurant etc...)

I have stayed at the Valle several times, and last Jan. they were redoing the lobby, and I assume the rooms. But, our room was fine. It takes about 10 minutes of slow walking to get to Termini. We are in our late 60's to 79 year old. I always check several places before reserving, as the prices vary greatly.

I can recommend Hotel Kennedy, a few minutes from Termini. The hotel was renovated a few years ago and the staff is pleasant.

Regarding the above post - there is no way the Colosseum is a 10 minute walk from Termini.

I agree, the Colosseum is absolutely NOT a 10-minute walk from Termini. It is more like 35 minutes.
The Hotel Guiliana gets good reviews on Trip Advisor. I have walked past it and it looks fine. It is very close to Termini.
A really great restaurant near Termini is Trattoria Monti on Via San Vito. It gets my Thin's Thumbs Up.
I, personally, love the area around Maria Maggiore. I think it feels like a real neighbourhood. This area gets an undeserved bad rap and I can't understand why.

You might want to look at the Raffaello. Walkable to/from Termini, but not too close.

It gets good reviews on Trip Advisor and Venere. I can post my own in a few weeks.

Look at the Best Western Hotel Canada. It's about 5 blocks from Termini. I guarantee you, if you choose it, you will never stay anywhere else in Rome unless money is no object.
We've stayed here over 20 times in the last 15 years. Very tastefully decorated, spacious rooms with a great buffet breakfast. Some say the staff is chilly, but they're not to me. But then, they know me when I arrive.
