I stayed at the Santa Chiara in the Pantheon area, and I found it an excellent location. Walking distance to Piazza Navona (about 10 minutes or less) and about 20-25 minutes to the Spanish Steps (longer if you are window shopping.) I loved my hotel, but just yesterday there was again very high praise from someone who just stayed at the Albergo del Senato (also Pantheon area, actually facing it I think) and I must say I'm tempted to try it in the future, just to try another hotel.

I think the Trastevere area is charming, but I wouldn't find it convenient for most usual sightseeing, but some people like being off the beaten track. The Vatican area is decidedly not convenient as a base, imo.

Just got back from Italy. Since you will be there for almost a week, why not you try B&B. We booked through www.sleepingrome.com and stayed at B&B code ref 18-22. This place is newly renovated with IKEA furnishing and it's only 3 mins walk from the main station (hence no need to store your luggage at the station). The price is very reasonable (Euro 82 for two person in ensuite room with breakfast or Euro 69 with shared bathroom). Luka (one of the owner) is most helpful and chatty. Wish we had more days there.

We were just in Rome during the first part of May. Stayed at the Santa Chiara and it was great.

Just around the back of the Pantheon. Five minutes to Piazza Navona. Same to Fountain of Trevi and about 15 minutes to the Spanish Steps.

Also, not more than 20 minutes easy walk to the Forum.

Excellent hotel and great location.
Hi Norma,
I like the Spanish Steps area a lot. I recommend Casa Howard. They have a web site, www.casahoward.com
I found them to be reasonably-priced, conveniently located, and very customer-service oriented.

My second choice of a place to stay would be the Piazza Navonna area mentioned by a few posters here.

I found everything very walkable from the Spanish Steps, although I did take the Metro (very close by) out to the Vatican the morning I attended Papal Audience, and I found doing this very easy and affordable.

Buon Viaggio,
BC

We stayed 9 days last month at the Hotel Fontanella Borghese about five blocks down the Via Condotti from the Spanish Steps. Really liked the neighborhood, and the hotel was very quiet, clean and comfortable. About 190 euros a night for a double including a good breakfast buffet. (See more details in a posting about this hotel from about a week ago.)

I wouldn't get too hung up over "what district to focus on." If you're only interested in Ancient Rome (Colosseum, Forum, Domus Aurea, etc.), then stay in that area. If you're only interested in Vatican City, then stay there. If you plan to see most of the main sights, you're going to do some walking no matter where you stay, even if you pick a hotel "in the middle."

However, if budget is your main concern, you will probably find more bargains near Termini Station or farther away from the center in any direction.
