How many days do I need to see the points of interest in Rome & Florence.

Depends greatly on what you mean by "points of interest." Do you want to see every museum and important site in both cities? 3 nights in each place give or take is probably about average.

I could spend weeks in each and never see all the points that interest me.

What are your interests?

I would do a minimum of 5 days in Rome and 4 in Florence (which gives you 1 or 1.5 days into Tuscany). This will let you hit major spots. To do all of interest will take weeks.

I agree with nytraveler. 5 full days in Rome and 3 full days in Florence with maybe a day trip to Siena thrown in while in Florence.
