Rome Airport
Can anyone tell me what we should do with a 5 hour layover in the Rome Airport. We arrive there at 7:30am and don't leave for Venice until 12:30pm......... That's a long time to watch people....
Any suggestions?
Thanks,BB

When you add in customs and immigration, you're cutting your time down. Then, given the time of the morning, there won't be anything open. To get to the center of Rome will take 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, so there's another 1 to 1.5 hours. So, you don't really have the time you think.

Are both of your flights from FCO?
5hr would be a tad close to get to Rome. You may be able to do it (1) if the flight gets in on time, (2) if the passport control line isn't too long, (3) if you don't have to wait for the luggages. Thought the train runs every 30 min, takes about 30 min to Termini station. Overall, you're most likely to have just about 1 hour or so.
You might not have enough time to do this if things get delayed etc--Play it flexible.

Thanks everyone..... I kind of figured that we might not have time to do anything. Are there shops and restaurants in the airport? Malto Mario (food network) says the best cappuccinos are in the Rome Airport near customs.....Agree? Guess I'll have my first one there......

If you are flying all night from the states and arriving at 730am-you are not going to have the time or energy to go out to Ostia for a visit. Traffic is horrible in the morning from FCO airport to the city(at least an hour each way) so I would highly recommend just getting grabbing a bite to eat;having a coffee and just chilling till the next flight. If you are arriving at the C terminal and leaving out of the domestic terminal at A,that will take up some time walking and dealing with security, check in,etc. Although it seems like a long time, it really won't be.

I don't know that you can't do it, I purposely have booked twice to come back through Rome on my way home from visiting my family in the U.S. and have taken the train in and just walked around, had a bite to eat and then went back to the airport for my afternoon flight.
Ostia is great! If there is a train that goes there from the airport (we went there from Terminus in Rome), by all means do it. A beautiful beach and the ocean air will wake you up and start your day off well.

We did this once to have lunch at a resaurant on via Marsala across from termini. It was the sort of place you would never go into without knowing what it was like. Sadly the owner has died and it is no longer as good as it once was.
While you probably have time to get into Rome and back, there is really little of interest in the area that you could see unless you just want to be able to tell people that you did it when you get home.
