Road Trip?
Hey all,
We were thinking of doing an old school road trip (you know get in the car see where you end up). We are starting in Milan and I was thinking maybe up to Prague over to Budapest down to Dubrovnik and then I think there is a ferry to Bari. Any thoughts? Any other directrion we should go in or things to hit?
Any help would be great! Thanks

How long the trip? Can you take your rental or lease through Slovenia and Croatia? If you are renting, consider starting in Munich and ending there. I believe that the rates would be much lower than in Italy; for some reason, one can rent a car outside Italy and drive it there without paying the high insurance fees that are imposed there.

Really? Because a quick search seems like 10 hours to Prague then 7 to Budapest and then 12 to Dubrovnik. If I would skip Prague and stay in a more easter direction to Budapest would that be better? Or really any ideas or advice would be great

I suppose it depends if you like driving. I love it. Perhaps the best mix is a day driving, then a whole day or two where you stop before moving on. A car does have some great advantages, like being able to choose your route and stop when you want.

You might want to use Mappy or ViaMichelin to figure out how far you woiuld be driving and for how long, even by just using the reference points you gave originally. Then add what you might want to see in between and see if you have enough time to cover all of it.

Hi D,
As I rule of thumb, I suggest not driving more than 4 hr/day if you want to see anything.
Also staying one night, driving, staying one night, driving.... quickly gets boring.
>Trying to have some sort of romantic adventure!<
Driving 7 - 12 hr/day is not conducive to Romance.

Thanks for the help so far. I did check map24 and that's where I got those rough drive times. Now the bf is saying he's not so interested in easter europe. Don't know if this is a milanese thing but I've been to Prague and found it to be stunning. Any hot spots or tiny places you guys can rec?

I don't know if your calculations on how long it takes to get from city to city include what kind of roads you'll be on. I know unless we're on one of the autostrada in Europe, it always takes longer than it would take us here in the States. And if the point is to see, you don't want to spend all your time on some superhighway, anyway, do you? I love the smaller roads that wind through all the wonderful villages. It takes longer, but worth it IMO.

Hi Danie,
We spent a full week driving from Venice to Budapest via Slovenia, then back along different roads hitting a bit of Austria. Lots of driving, but we had a good time. We spent 3 nights in Budapest, then single nights elsewhere, sometimes finding it hard to find a place to stay.
Maybe look at Istria, then ferry down to Split or Dubrovnik, then back to Ancona or Bari.
Or I would go to Prague (my favorite city!), then to Dubrovnik (never been, but going in June). I have no earthly idea what the travel route would be.
It seems you'll still need a few more days than 10 to do any kind of road trip out of Milan. Road miles sure take alot more time than what we're all used to here in the states.
Good luck with your planning.

After reading Kellyee's post I really feel like we can do this! But the question is now developing into how do you deal when your SO really is indifferent to making any choices? Do you just go ahead and decided by yourself? Sit them down and force them to go through bullet points of your research?
