Restaurants near/on the Grassmarket, Edinburgh
Yet another food question...
When we arrive in Edinburgh via the train from Aberdeen it will be noonish. By the time we get to the hotel on Lauriston St and either check in, or store our bags, we are going to be hungry.
I would like to take the four of us to lunch somewhere in Old Town, somewhere between (or about) our hotel and the Castle which we plan to visit after lunch. This is most likely going to be around 1:30 or 2pm, so we will miss the heavy lunch crowds (I hope).
I've been researching some ideas... most of the time we will wing it in Edinburgh based on my lists, but since we have a set destination this day and are just arriving, I'd like something planned.
My ideas so far are below, and any comments or what you would pick, or what you would avoid at all costs would be appreciated (or if something has closed, as I've been finding out)...
1. Deacon Brodies - Royal Mile
2. The Lot - Grassmarket
3. Monster Mash - Forrset Road (I definitely want to go here at some point, not necessarily our first meal)
4. Atlas Restaurant - Candlemaker Row (I can't find much on this as their website is under construction)
5. Maxies Bistro - Johnston Terrace
6. The White Hart Inn - Lawnmarket
or???
Thanks

How about the Grainstore on Victoria Street? It's very close to the Grassmarket/Royal Mile. Lovely food (lots of Scottish ingredients), nice atmosphere, good value set-price lunch.

I've recommended it on this board a few times, mainly because I love the place and go there whenever I'm back in Edinburgh!

The Grainstore is quite expensive at night, but I didn't know about the value set lunch.
I really like Le Petit Paris in the Grassmarket - www.grassmarket.net/featured/Petit_Paris.htm
I'd also recommend the Hub which is on the Royal Mile, just below the Castle - www.thehub-edinburgh.com
These are both quite casual.
Is this during the week or at the weekend ?

If Two Thin Laddies still exists in the Grassmarket, they make excellent soup and sandwiches. It has been a few years since I last visited Edinburgh and I really don't know. Restaurants come and restaurants go.

I think Two Thin Laddies is on Hig Riggs near Tollcross, isn't it - so the opposite direction from the way Amelie wants to go.
Amelie, I seem to have lost my previous line where I said I would not recommend anywhere on your list except Monster Mash & maybe that's better at night - it could wipe you out altogether !
I don't think you'll encounter "heavy lunch crowds" on a Thursday

The Hub looks like what we are looking for...
I think Two Thin Laddies still exists, I saw info a few weeks ago:

(I had it down for breakfast).

I'm a big fan of Le P'tit Paris too. I like Sept on the Mile. What's the name of that very worth place at the bottom of the Grassmarket, Caroline- a couple of doors down from the Black Bull- converted Church hall? It's good too. As is the Indian on the other side of the road from the Hub. Sorry about this. I'm not so good at names

Glad to hear Two Thin Laddies still exists. I did not discover it until the end of a month long trip and wish I had discovered it sooner. Place for a relatively inexpensive--considering the exchange rate now, I use the word "inexpensive" only in comparison with what is likely in other eateries--meal. Nothing fancy, mind you, but home made and good soups and sandwiches.

"that very worth place", Sheila ?
I think I know what you mean by the place that looks like a converted church hall, though - the place right at the King's Stables Road end of the Grassmarket ? It was a whisky bar the last time I knew but don't know what it is now.
Amelie, I guess Le Petit Paris is more a place for a proper 2/3 course meal, although it is casual - but the Hub offers more variety during the daytime I guess, in terms of just being able to have soup/sarni/cake/whatever. If you go there have a snoop around the rest of the building if you can - the decor is pretty mindblowing !

Sheila I think the name of the restaurant you are looking for is The Lot http://www.grassmarket.net/content/d...er.php/The_Lot which was mentioned at the outset.
Amelie.
The Hub at the corner of Castlehill / Johnston Terrace would be a good idea as it is not such a steep walk to the castle as it can be from the Grassmarket, especially immediately after lunch.
Petit Paris is very good and has already been mentioned. It may possible be best to book it for lunch as it is very popular. The Grain Store I would agree can be expensive but good food. Another two to think about would be Maison Bleue in Victoria Street www.grassmarket.net/featured/Maison_Bleue.
The other is Merchants www.merchantsrestaurant.co.uk in Merchant Street, just off Candlemaker Row at the far end of the Grassmarket All are worth thinking about as the provide good food.

Merchant's looks nice also, but they only serve til 2pm. May be a bit close, will have to see how we are on time. Or maybe another day.
Although, I think I'd like to keep lunches under 8 pounds or so (I'm just a poor grad student) unless we are in the mood for a two-course meal (Merchant's is 10.50GBP.)
I guess I will keep it at either The Lot or The Hub. Both are making me hungry right now as it is almost 1pm and I've not had lunch yet.
3 weeks and 1 day to go!

I am also counting the days to my main holiday - you must arrive 2 days before I leave !
Not en route to the Castle, but another place not far from your accommo which you may want to try is the Traverse theatre bar, which does nice reasonably priced food. Also the Filmhouse is not bad.
