Can anyone provide recommendations for restaurants in the following German cities:

Heidelberg
Munich
Weimar
B erlin

We are looking for restaurants where we can get good local food - something unique to the city or country. Also, good beer is always a priority!

Thanks for your input!

I did a search on "restaurants" in Germany and came up with the following previous posts:

Munich:
Well, every one goes to the "Hofbräuhaus" right in the heart of
Munich. But that is a touristic spot, althought it reflects the typical bavarian cuisine, that every traveller
knows from the travel guides.
But have a look at the "Käfer" Restaurant, for really nice fine dining.
"Käfer" is a reknown Munich speciality restaurant (and delicatess shop), which also now has depandances in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Tokio.
And if you have an afternoon free, drive to the holy mountain of "Andechs"
about 45km south of munich.
Here you will find an absolute fantastic spot to enjoy of the Ammerlake/valley as well as "Haxn"(roasted pork bavarian style)
fresh brewed "Weissbier". Order a "Mass" of "Weissbier" (about 1liter)
Enjoy your stay.

Berlin:
I would enjoy the very classical "preussische" cuisine of the
Restaurant "Die Quadriga",
the Restaurant lies no far from the
"Kurfürstendamm". It is really elegant and takes you back to that age as germany was ruled by "Kaiser(emporer) Wilhelm II. The interior is somehow "Biedermeier" ut light and classic. Menues are about EUR 65-90 P/P
And don't miss a show at the really unique "Wintergarden Theatre"(variete german style) which has be known already since the "golden 20s".

I was in Munich for almost a wee in July 2001. I highly recommend Spatenhaus, which is near the Opera Haouse. It has a large menu and is reasonable. More more a splurge, the up-scale deli Daggmeyer (sp?) is wonderful.
Try the Augustinerbrau Beer Garten. It is located near the Hauptbahnoff.

I have a bunch of restaurant descriptions and links from Munich on my websight. Check it out!
http://home.earthlink.net/~richardab/

Our favorite restaurant in Munich was Der Tannenbaum, Kreuzstrassen 18 near Sedlinger Tor tube stop or 10 minute walk from Marienplatz. Good prices, great food and gracious owners.

Anyway, you get the idea. Lots more recommendations if you do a search.

Excerpted from an older (but still very good) thread on Munich restaurants.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1301627

Author: Rex ([email protected])
Date: 12/21/2001, 07:31 pm

Message: A year (and four days!) old - - but still probably useful information:

http://www.nytimes.com/2000/12/17/travel/17TAB.html

Best wishes,

Rex
Just got back from Heidelberg, and can highly recommend the restaurant at the Weisser Bock (on Grosse Mantelgasse, about two blocks from the Heiliggeistkirche) for dinner. Cafe Burkhart is a locals' favorite (on Unterestrasse, in between the Weisser Bock and the same church). My last visit there (about a year ago) included very good meals at the Vetter Brauerei (on the road that leads from the church to the old bridge across the Neckar) and the Kultur Brauerei (on Leyergasse). You can get a local dish at this last spot that's made of a cow's stomach (sort of haggis-like, apparently); I can't remember the name just now. The Guldenes Schaff (spelling probably entirely wrong---translates as the Golden Sheep) was also very good.

This trip I had a pretty terrible meal at Merlin (on Bergheimstrasse, outside of the tourist area), and my last visit included a mediocre meal at the Golden Lamb (I won't include the translation; it's located on the other side of the Neckar).

I can't remember many specific places from my last visits to Munich or Berlin. For a real blast from the past in Berlin have breakfast/brunch or a snack at the Cafe Kranzler (on the Ku'Damm). Try and figure out where in time you've stopped; it felt like maybe 1952 to me.

In Munich, try the DanInsl near the Marienplatz for great homemade sausage and lots of good beer....their Nuremburg Rostbratwurst ( little mild sausages) are excellent! Yum! Follow your nose to the Haxn'bauern for great roasted pork, and chicken. This is the speciality of the area.
Finally, visit Alois Dallmayer for great foods to go or to eat in - this is a huge shop with food specialities from all over the world...it's a great place to find little gifts for friends back home! These 3 are all easily walkable from the Marienplatz.

Last year in Munich we stumbled into a great italian joint near the Muncher Freihat Station, just across Leopold Str and a little north. It is called Al Pachino's, sounds American??? not on your life, menu is in italian and german ONLY, no waiters spoke english. The best pizza, carppacchio(sp?)and desserts we had on our entire 2-wk trip--it will be my first stop this year.

For good food in a Beer hall--DONT GO TO THE HOFFBRAU, it sucks, go to the Augustiner Haus, a few blocks up from the glockenspeil.
