Renfe same day train change?
I booked on-line my Renfe Preferente Class ticket Madrid to Oviedo using the estrella (discount) fare. Because no discount seats were offered on a the mid sfternoon train, I selected the last train of the day.
Question : If my flight arrives early & I make it to the Chamartin station before any earlier trains leave, and there are seats available, can I make the change at the station & what, if any, would be the cost of the change?

I guess anything's possible. How's your Spanish so that you can explain the situation.
I've never done it before, but from what I know, if there are seats available, then you will probably have to pay a change fee since they will loose the revenue on the train you booked. You would also have to pay the difference in the cost of the tickets.

There will be a fee for changing the Estrella fare
Para el mismo día, 15 % de gastos.
For Same day 15%
Distinto día, 20 % de gastos.
For a different day 20%
Cuando se solicite el cambio dentro de los siete días antes del viaje, además de los gastos de cambio establecidos, se percibirá la diferencia con la nueva tarifa solicitada
When done later than 7 days in advance you must also pay the difference of the new fare available.

Thanks for the replies.
Will give it a try if my flight from the US arrives early and estrella priced seats are still available on earlier trains.
I notice that there's a Sala Club at the Chamartin station which Preferente passengers can enter. Wonder if the receptionists there can be of some help finding seat availability?

I doubt it. you will most likely have to go to customer service to make the change at the station or the Renfe ticket window in Barajas.
You will be able to see seat availibility the night before onine, at least you will already know if the Estrella fare has disappeared and can make your calculations.

sorry.. I see you have "clase preferente".. perhaps then YES a quick stop at the club office would at least point you the right direction to make your changes if you hadn't done so at Barajas and lines were bad at customer service.
