In my travels, I've seen paper 'coverlettes' available at some churches. They come in a variety of colours & are particularly attractive worn over shorts & tank tops of those folks who think that this appropriate dress to enter a church!

2010 - it was fun watching some 20s ages gals trying to improvise proper attire at Sst Peter's after they showed up and were turned back by the God Squad at the doors for showing too much skin or not the right type of skin - shorts.

So they had sweaters in their day packs and tried putting them on as pants - the ploy flopped but it was funny watching.

Seriously though when is the Catholic Church ever going to grow up? No wonder nearly no Catholics in places like France go to Mass anymore and IMO many mock the Catholic Church as being completely behind the times.

Pal, I have told you this before but your constant negative comments about the RC church which you do not even belong to is rude. And why were you at St. Peter's since you feel such distaste not only towards the RC church but all religions per your numerous posts I have read over the years.

And may I add you are sure behind the times inspite of other Fodorites advising you on other threads that women are NOT required to cover their heads since 1965. Get with the program, lol.

It's interesting how different religions view head coverings. I went to a Sikh wedding where everyone had to have their feet bare and their heads covered; we women used scarves, one of the docs I worked with wore his yarmulke while another doc wore a baseball cap. Seems they didn't care what was on the head as long as it was covered!!

My then 12 year old daughter was told to "cover up" while wearing a scoop neck shirt before she would be permitted entry to St Peter's......one woman was very offended when she entered the cathedral, removed her jacket (she was wearing a tank top underneath), and was promptly asked to put it back on or leave.

That is interesting about the Sikh religion, tenthumbs. We have a Sikh community in our county and I have always noticed the men when they are out and about due to their turbans. I never thought about it but to my knowledge I have not seen a Sikh woman. The Sikh religious community has a public invited festival each year or so. I have never gone to one, it would be interesting I am sure. Sadly after a 911 a Sikh gentleman was murdered here in our county, the killer "thought" he was a Muslim. Some defense that, sigh.

But anyway, back to Italy. Short sleeve tops or dresses with a skirt covering the knee or capris or of course long pants is all that is required. Carrying around a shawl or sweater when it is hot weather seems to me to be more of a workout versus just having on a top that provides sufficient coverage.
