Recommendations for Rome apartment

Hello, thanks to the wonderful people at Fodors Friends, I am narrowing down my search for an apt. in Rome.

I think we'd like to stay in either the Navona or Pantheon areas. Any neighborhoods you prefer over others?

We are a family of 4, and would like an apt. with air conditioning that is quiet for a visit next summer. Ideally, I'd like to spend around 150 Euro/night, but would go up to 200 Euro.

If you have someone place you stayed within our parameters that you would recommend, I would love to hear about it.

Many thanks,
k.

I think your budget might be a bit on the low side for those locations in high season. I prefer not to have someone sleeping in the living room as they don't end up getting much rest because of others going to bed late or getting up early. This apartment might work and is not far.

You can read a review of it on Fodorite's Kristina's webpage.

If you don't care if someone sleeps in the living room, this apartment is not too far and gets good reviews (search for Tedgale trip report with Rome in the title).

italyby.com

my 2 fav folks for this

Careful many scammers fake owners tax cheats vrbo craigslist

Individual direct rentals are not legal police will not help

you if scammed NEVER wire money always use agents of repute

and pay with credit card.

In addition to AC be aware elevators are not common

so ground floor and first floor apts are preferred for most.

Happy Hunting!

We stayed in a boutique "guest house" near the US Embassy for a week this past September. It wasn't far from the Borghese Park, and the bus lines were quite easy to use. Rome is packed with tourists. We stayed near Piazza Navonna ten years ago, and loved it. Of course, we found ourselves back in those areas on this trip, but we were happy to know we were headed back to a nice quiet location to sleep. We made good use of the transportation available with the Roma cards for 3 days, and found ourselves zipping all over the city, so we bought bus/subway passes a couple of other days as well.

You are fine to stay in the areas you are looking at, but if you see something near the US Embassy, check it out as well. While restaurants along the via Venito are expensive, there are others in the area that are moderate and cater to local residents.

I can't recommend a specific apartment as the one we rented would be too small for your family, but ItalyPerfect was a great agency to work with and they do have larger apartments.

We stayed in Sleep-in-Italy's Balestrari apartment two years ago. It has two bedrooms; there is something like a high transom window between the two bedrooms, if that matters. It has a washing machine, which was helpful since we stayed there near the end of our trip. It is right around the corner from Campo dei Fiori, so you can head down in the morning to pick up fresh fruit. There is a small grocery on the corner, where you can pick up milk, bread, etc.
The apartment was very clean. The owner, who met us, was prompt and very nice. Sleep in Italy was great to deal with (our second time in a S-I-L apartment).
The apartment is super convenient to everything--we walked everywhere (but we like to walk). I was there with my sister and a friend and we felt comfortable walking out at night separately. I think the price for 4 people is 150E.
It is on the second floor (European). There is a restaurant across the street (if you can call it a street--it is very narrow). I don't remember a noise problem, but I was in the inside bedroom. However, my friend did not complain. We all said we would love to stay there again, so I suppose that is a good recommendation.

mama_mia,
We are staying in the Balestrari apt next June. I'm glad you liked it. It's looks really nice online. I'm glad about the convenient stores.
Thanks,
Michele

We stayed at the Accetti that kybourbon mentions this past spring. I'd recommend it with some reservations (what ages are your kids? they are very strict about noise in that building and I got the sense that residents in the building, which is pretty posh, don't care for the vacationers too much...also, no washing machine). anyway, we rented directly through the owner on vrbo. No real problems--great location!

I have also stayed here:
http://www.lacasaroma.com/apartments_giulio.php
though we rented through rentalinrome. It was wonderful, just a truly beautiful apartment and much bigger than we needed.

For less money, check out realrome.com. I've have tried to rent their 2bd in the Jewish ghetto a few times but it's always booked. I think it would be fantastic if you weren't seeking luxury, and they are really easy to work with. My sister and I stayed in one of their little studios on via dei Cappellari years ago. Terrific and very inexpensive!

Have a great trip.

We just booked with Sleep in Italy for their Seminario apartment. It is a bit more than your budget (250E per night), but it is literally steps away from the Pantheon. There is a good review on Slow Trav and a few good reviews on Trip Advisor as well. It has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. My husband and I are traveling with my parents as well as our son and could have made do with a two bedroom but found this three bedroom so inexpensive that we couldn't resist.

The Balestrari apt. looks wonderful: Nice apartment, roomy, cheap (for the location), GREAT neighborhood.

Would stay there in a heartbeat if I needed a 2BR.

We will be staying in the Balestrari - just confirmed it today. Thanks so much for the recommendation.

The Accetti looked nice, too - I did contact them, and was informed it does not have A/C. (The listing says that it does).

I liked that the Balestrari has 2 bedrooms (which made it more attractive to me than the Miguel - but I know that apt. received high reviews from several Fodor's folks). My kids could sleep on a pull out couch, but the past two ones they've slept on were really bad. My older son rarely complains, but the one he did sleep on in a very nice condo in Oregon actually felt like there were springs poking out!

I appreciate all your replies - thanks for your help!

I think your family will enjoy the area. The market is entertaining and the location is only slightly less central than the Pantheon area. We enjoyed wandering the back streets --there was alway something new and unexpected to see enroute to one of the sites.

I would strongly recommend this property "At House Townhouse – Filiberto” in Rome. It is located at via E. Filiberto, 109 in Rome on the fourth floor of a quiet residential building between metro stations Termini and Manzoni. The managers are sooooo good. We can praise them and their property for hours.

Through Sleep in Italy, look for Piazza Monteveccio- 2bd/1bth, huge apartment about 200 meters from Navona, negative is that it is on the 4th floor (5th by US counting) with no lift.
