Well if you're going Frankfurt-Munich-Salzburg and then from the German border back to Frankfurt the German Twin Pass at $150 p.p. for four days on unlimited travel in a one-month period would be far cheaper than the normal Frankfurt-Salzburg and back to Frankfurt fare (check prices at www.bahn.de for the German trips) - for 2006 German pass prices - they also come in 1st class and longer versions: www.budgeteuropetravel.com and click on German passes - you could also consider the three country Eurail Select Pass three country version - good in Germany, Austria and Solvenia and Croatia (the latter two are considered one country for the pass purposes) - this starts at $315 p.p. in 1st class on a SaverPass for five days of unlimited travel in a 2-month period and comes in 6- 8- and 10-day versions as well - remember on these passes if you take an overnight train and board after 7pm the next day is your unlimited travel day, meaning you could go from Ljubljana to Frankufrt on one travel day if you needed or wanted to - assuming there is a night train from Ljubljana to Munich, etc. from where you'd connect on your unlimited travel day the next morning to go to Munich. Select passes, where you select your own countries, also come in longer versions. Both German and Select passes can be used on any trains so no dealing with discounted tickets that are non-changeable non-refundable plus often frustrating to get online. I think the EurailSelect could be the thing for your plans - again the Budget europe site has all the prices and they'll take hours answering any questions, a rarity in the travel world in my experience. www.ricksteves.com and www.euraide.com also have good info on passes and other options.
