The Nisanyan House seems to be highly regarded on this board. My husband and I will be in Turkey in February and are considering staying there. However, I do have a question. In looking at the hotel pics we are interested in the Ilyastepe Cottages.

Has anyone stayed in the cottages? The website mentions a walk or taking a donkey to the cottages...does this mean that we can't drive up and park our car nearby? Not that I mind a walk (the donkey I'm not so sure about...) but I don't know what the weather is going to be like. Also, I know that these cottages don't have as many modern ammenities. I'm worried that they will be too chilly.

And finally, for those of you who have stayed here, if you haven't stayed in the cottages did you stay in the houses or the inn? I'm really interested in the houses but they are a little above our budget. I'm hoping that the rooms in the Inn are as nice?

Tracy I stayed a couple of nights in a room at the inn. It was not large but was really lovely. In fact my screen saver is a photo of a hand-painted fresco from the wall of my room. I did not see the cottages, however, but can highly recommend the rooms at the inn. I found the place to be very charming. Excellent breakfasts, too.

We did not stay in the cottages, but I think they are actually down from the Inn. The village is quite steep and the Inn is I believe right at the top. You can drive a car on a road kind of around the edge of the village and park right at the Inn but then you have to walk down some terraces to the cottages and down further to the village. Maybe why they refer to walking or taking a donkey if you stay at the cottages. If you are there in winter I would think you would like the coziness of the Inn. The public rooms are really nice with great furnishings, very unique. I usually don't care too much where I stay or want to pay too much for it but I think even at current prices on their website the Inn is a very good value. You might also look at their sister property in Sirince, Kilisealti Pansiyon, I got the description from the Nisanyan website. http://www.nisanyan.com/kilisealti.htm The rooms are less than half the price and yet they say you still have use of the Inn common areas, internet access, etc. Sounds like a good deal. The village is quite small and exactly where you stay there shouldn't make a difference location wise. Once we parked the car, we took it out again only to go out of the village. In the village you can walk everywhere.

Yes, we had a very good dinner in the restaurant.

Did not eat in the restaurant. It was back in 2003 so I am not sure there even was one then except of course for breakfast. We had one dinner at a local casual place in the village and one dinner at the nice place I forget what it is called but I think it is well known for its wine.

Yes, there are quite a few places to eat out of the hotel. Sirince is something of a wine village...

Which leads me to another question...how is the wine in Turkey? Did either of you try it? I'm sure I'll bring a bottle back regardless of the taste because I imagine Turkish wine will be something of a novelty, but I'm curious.

There are some real good wines you would be surprised. Some does not sell at supermarket. If you are passing by Cappadocia, you may also like those to some extend. Especially Red. Being at 1300 meters here wine can be like drinking water if you got the right company too Upscale wines are from wineries like Corvus, Gestin Doluca and Kavaklidere. If you like white Srafin of Doluca is good.

In Cappadocia Cabernet Savignon of Kocabag and Seneler of Turasan good choices.

Hi, my friends and i stayed at the Nisanyan House this past September. We stayed in a house one night and at the Inn the 2nd night. Overall the place is really nice. The people are wonderful and very helpful. Breakfast was included in the price and it was delicious. Can't say the same for dinner, first of all it was really overpriced and just not that good. I suggest walked down to the town for dinner, plenty of restaurants with a good selection of food and much better prices. As for wine, my friends and i didn't care for any of it, then again we are from California and have a huge selection around us. There are quite a few wine shops in town that offer samples, very friendly people so stop by and try for yourself. Enjoy your trip.
