No pubs close to the Eye but the Anchor by The Globe Theatre is old and very nice. Go in the small back room with the flagstone floor. The oldest pubs are around the City (financial district), Smithfield and Farringdon. My favourite is the Jerusalem Tavern in Farringdon. Its owned by the St Peter's Brewery and has wonderful beer.
Can't comment on Knightsbridge but the Red Lion which is behind Fortnum and Mason's just down a side street is good. Lots of chain pubs around, with All Bar One being ok - reliable for food - and the Witherspoons chain having cheap beer (not good food).

Fancyapint.com has reviews of many/most london pubs, organizing them by tube stop location and rating them from one to four "Pints". They also recommend pub crawls. This is a good site for gathering info on where to visit. We found most of their recommendations to be pretty accurate.

The Museum Tavern (The Dog and Duck, in the olden days) is right across the street from the British Museum. It is very small and often too packed to get into, but if you go in right at opening or an hour or two after lunch, you can sit back and enjoy the little pub where both dickens and Marx quaffed a pint or two in their time. Some might say it’s nothing special, but it’s a nice atmosphere and in a good neighborhood. All in all it’s one of my favorites.
